Dont know what the upgrade to 64 Bit will look like. A whole lot of heartache if any of your programs or devices use unsigned kernel-mode drivers.
Thankfully, RivaTuner doesn't have that problem anymore. -- "There is much pleasure to be gained from useless knowledge." - Bertrand Russell |

| reply to MJimLay said by MJimLay :My uncle just upgraded his Dell Inspiron 530 from 2 GB Ram to 6 GB Ram (will upgrade to 8 GB soon) and noticed a huge improvement. Most people typically do, even if they have always looked at it from a "why would I need that much memory? I'm never going to use that much" standpoint, at least as far as Vista is concerned, because even if Task Manager says the memory is going unused, it all depends on your definition of the word "use." SuperFetch just preemptively loads frequently-accessed shit into free system memory, but it's flagged as a cache (the actual term is "standby page"), so it's not viewed as "in use" as it could be freed up at any time. First time I went from 4GB to 8GB I noticed an immediate boost in performance after SuperFetch did its thing (the only problem being SuperFetch loads everything in background idle priority so it appears as if the HD is being thrashed if you're not doing anything else with it), and upgraded again to 12GB in a mostly-new rig with a further improvement, despite the fact that my actual memory "needs" haven't changed any. I'm still "using" only about 2.4-4GB of it.
Though it also helps to have a program like LaaTiDo around for those finicky 32-bit apps that want to use the theoretical maximum for 32-bit apps, but can't cuz their creators are idiots. -- "There is much pleasure to be gained from useless knowledge." - Bertrand Russell |

| reply to Duchess44 I also have a Dell 530 inspiron. And it is now upgraded a bit. I have 4 gb Ram and a Gforce 9500 with 1 gb onboard memory. I did upgrade the power supply to 400 watt tho. Didnt want it bumping its head. Overall upgrade costs were well below your budget numbers. Even the power supply was under $40.00...Tigerdirect.com has a sale on the 9500 right now for 64.99. memory cost 125.00 not bad. I do play WOW,COD4 and UT3 full graphics no stutter just great! Love it |

Most people aren't running games over emulation or virtualization software. That's a pretty big undisclosed admission.
Why any serious gamer would do that anyway . . . makes me wonder, unless you had no other choice. |

I am currently running 4 GB ram on my Q6600 and it drags. I play WoW and for the first 10 minutes or so of playing, music skips, game freezes, voices stutters, etc. There is also a ton of hard drive swapping during that 10 minutes or so.
After that 10 minutes, the game runs great on max settings I will be upgrading to 8 GB once my funds allow it. I'd love to upgrade to 12 GB or 16 GB, but my system won't allow that much memory and 4 GB sticks are just too expensive at this time. Now, if I had 8 slots, would be a different story! |

1 edit | reply to elios I just picked up a 4850... nice card, it's the same MSI as above, good deal for 90 bucks after rebate.
Edit: It was to replace my EVGA 8800GT where the VRAM was starting to die. Didn't read the fine print on the warranty and got hosed by it(didn't register my product). |

1 edit | reply to longstreet i dont know about you be it like AA and AF and being able to max out a game its nice picking up and game and not having to think "can i run this with ok settings"
i just buy one install it and max every thing out maybe drop AA a bit if i have too
imo GTS250 or 4850 MIN both cards can be had for ~150 or less if you look around for the price is a great deal the next cards down go for 100 to 125 any way(edit: the GTS250 and 4850 are easily twice as fast as the cards under them like the 8600GT/9600GT and 4650) and the ones under that are trash |

4 edits | reply to elios You must have never gamed EVGA for their warranty . . .
Step 1 ) Get owner's information
Step 2 ) Send in warranty claim as the original owner (or have them submit it)
Step 3 ) Enjoy.
Usually, the cost of a better warranty (say, with BFG) is as costly or nearly as costly as buying a new, better card.
I'd go with the cheapest one that would do the job. WoW isn't that intensive. |

i still think 2x2GB of atlest DDR2 800 if your going to upgrade might as well make it worth it a q6600 is wasted with slow DDR2 667 |

4 edits | reply to Duchess44 EVGA cards have lifetime warranty, even used, if they were registered by the original owner. Going EVGA certainly isn't a gamble.
Go EVGA 8800 512 / 9800 512 . . .more than enough and easy on the wallet. They are the same card in many ways, the 9 series may have a few one offs.
The GTS for $150 is a pretty good deal . . .if you don't mind spending more. |

I know Newegg doesn't have the 8800GT no more, which is why I said to search Google for a good price on one.
I bought mine for $75 here on DSLR. (used) but in great condition. |

2 edits | reply to ztmike 2 things 1. the 8800GT has been phased out try to find one on newegg the 9800GT replaced it and GTS250 is only a step up from that its not as big a card as you think its in line with 9800GTX+
2. most good 9800GTs run 100 to 120 the GTS250 is 150ish as is the 4850 the 4850 is a much faster card then the 9800GT it really is worth it to get the 4850 for the 50 more
edit hell here is a BFG GTS250 for the same price as 9800GT why not get the better card for the same price? »www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a···14143191 »www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a···14143185 »www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a···14150337 |

1 edit | reply to elios This guy does NOT need that powerful of a GPU to play WoW. (GTS250) Or that much of a price difference between that and a 8800GT.
If I was him I would search Google for a good price on a Nvidia 8800GT 512ram card psu you mentioned above should do him fine: »www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a···17139005 |
