| Can not Get Basic Phone Service let alone Broadband service
What does one have to do to get Embarq to provide me phone service . I am moving into a new House in north Carolina in a new development. One half of the development is all lit up with Embarq and the folks on that side are happy with the service. I live less than 3 miles from that side and i can not get basic phone service. I have gotten all kinds of excuses from my address does not exist , to it is not on the E911 registry to the developer has not given them access. All of which i have found are not true ( sent embarq a copy of the contract they signed for easement). Not sure how i can get them to help .
any ideas or numbers to call ? |

So today i got an answer. I am unable to get phone service because it would be cost prohibitive to hook me up. And the fact that they wired up the first half of the development and have not made any money is the main reason why i get no phone service.
Did not embarq recieve moneis from the FCC for rural expansion specifically for these kinds of things. It is amazing that in this day and age one can not get BASIC PHONE SERVICE. i could not even get the cost to do this from them ( It is to expensive we are very sorry ). Less than 3 miles from where i know the cable comes into the development and i am out of luck . Incrediable |

The following is what my wife found -
ok - the FCC "encourages" phone companies to hook everyone up but apparently there is no "law" to force them to. There are also programs out there to help folks get hooked up when the phone company says they're so far away that it's gonna cost a fortune and they're charging you for it (although those programs are only for low income folks) but again, that only helps if you're poor and the phone company wants you to pay for the miles of cable.

I'm afraid your options are going to be cell phone for phone service and either a datacard or satellite for internet. You could look into the radio relay type system for basic service -
I'd imagine you have already contacted the cable company and got basically the same answer - too expensive to hook you up - so internet will be wireless or satellite - and same for TV - DBS or OTA antenna.
I'm half surprised that you got on the grid electric power. |

Thanks for the information . Already in contact with the public commissions office and town hall. An no i did not build on the top of a mountain . Right on a lake near hickory so it is not like i am 50 miles away from service.
Currently checking into Satellite service now and working with a cell service provider on other options.
I would really like to know what a fortune is . Like i said could not get a cost on the hookup. My sister and her husband lives 7 miles off the road in upstate new york , and it cost them $1500 to hook them up ( they had to supply the telephone poles) .. Granted all my utilities are underground
Talked to my buddy at AT&T , he can not even help since Embarq is the only one allowed in the area.
guess it is time to open up the rolodex and start making calls

Greenwood, SC | Were you made aware of the lack of phone service when you signed the contract? If not, this sounds like something you need to take up with the developer. If it's in the contract, you may be out of luck. |

Jerry,
I know of the exact development and is a beautiful location. Looking at the developers site, it clearly states utilities are underground. This is why it is so much. Also NC has a law the requires developers to pay for the infrastructure. This falls back on the company. I would contact your attorney and threaten legal action against the developer. |

I here what you are saying , and i am talking to the developer on this point as well. But my problem is this . Embarq is a huge multi-millon dollar organization , MY developer .. they have money to . I know my developer has spoken to embarq in recent days to find out what is going on . But embarq is not calling him ( or so my developer says)
You would think they would call him up and say look we have a mutual customer who wants to get hooked up , lets work out a deal to hook them up , somthing that as we get more hookups we put it back into the developments coffers. or something like that ..
but that has not happen , instead i now have to fight both sides to get BASIC PHONE SERVICE. granted i wanted the whole package , high speed internet, phone, tv but at this point will settle for phone.
And the fact that an easment agreement was signed in 2008 and the cable never run when they putting in the water and electric system .. is just crazy.
Well enough complaining and back to trying to get a not so simple phone 8 weeks and counting to get phone service

2 edits | Your fight with Embarq is going to go nowhere. The PUC has already ruled in favor of the ILEC's by making developers pay for the infrastructure in new developments.
You can dance around all day with the developer and Embarq, but in the end you won't have phone service unless you yourself end up paying for the line being run (My guess is this has been offered to you), or fight the developer.
Developers are putting up these new subdivisions and are sitting vacant. Multi-million dollar organizations still have shareholders to answer to and can't run lines to only have 20 new subs. As with the roads, the developer should pay for the infrastructure. The longer you wait, the less valid your argument will be. You should be on the phone talking to an attorney today. Take screen shots of the website. This is blatent false advertising. Regardless of what he/she is telling you, this is THEIR development and it is THEIR responsibility to make sure utilities are put in before advertising that they are. |

If this is true then i would hope my PUC rep would inform me of such. But to date that has not happen in fact it is the exact opposite of what they told me .
Do you have a link or info on what you are saying ? i have no issue going after the developer . I just want phone service .ok would love high speed internet to.
And just to keep the facts straight . No one from embarq has told me that the developer should have taken care of this nor have they offered me the honor of paying for it myself. I got an offer from a buddy of mine who works for cinncy bell , he and his buddy will come down and run the fiber for me . ( ok so it will cost me a good amount of beers ) but i doubt that will work as well ..
Heck i would even sublet the cable back to embarq afterwards when more people moved in . but i doubt that will work either ..

Still waiting on those links . Just found out if i was a low income family . then i would be eligible to get a phone line . ain't that a kick in the shorts . I want to get internet, phone , tv and am willing to pay top dollar for it all . and i can not get anything . yet if i was broke , then i could get service and at a discount ..
