Does There Exist Forum Software With These Features?

From time to time, I've considered starting a forum. Yet, I would like to have certain features. It seems that both VBulletin and PHPBB have most of the features I'm looking for, but there's a couple features that I'm hoping exists and if either VBulletin or PHPBB have these feature, I haven't found it.

Banning from Specific Forums:

The feature is this. On a site with forums, there's generally multiple forums available. There's also often Moderators just for specific forums.

So, is there any forum software that will allow the Moderator of a specific forum, to ban a user just from that specific forum, and not from the board as a whole?

There is the option of having nothing but global, or super moderators. But if they ban a user, they'd ban the user from the entire board.

Even if I did go that route, it would still be great to permit some folks to grant and deny access to specific forums, and only be able to for those specific forums for which they have permission, without Administrator intervention.

Both VBulletin and PHPBB have something called Access Masks or user-specific forum permissions, but only an Administrator can alter those settings, and I can tell you right away that if I run a forum, I'm not going to want many Admins. Ideally, I'd be the only one. Or perhaps....maybe one other Admin.

Non-Admins Setting Other Users' Passwords:

Another feature I'd be looking for is to perhaps allow one or two Global or Super Moderators to change the passwords of other users, on top of any Administrators.

I'd want that to be the only "Admin" function available to them, but no other Admin functions.

VBulletin does have the ability to have a "partial Admin" if you will, or one with only certain abilities. But, if you grant the privileges necessary to change others' passwords, then you'd also grant them the ability to promote and demote other users, which I don't want.

Whether PHPBB has this ability, I don't know. I'll have to look.

I consider this feature important for a couple reasons: A) I can see a user signing up with a temporary e-mail account, making password recovery impossible. B) For whatever reason, I could be away from the forum for a few days. What if someone can't log in during that time? So I'd like it if there could be someone else who can help them.

I would also be willing to consider other forum software, though it'd have to have these abilities.

I would ask this in the Vbulletin.org forums for paid or unpaid modifications. I do mods all the time but have no time to do it for you.

This does not sound too difficult, just custom perms. Any decent coder at the org site should be able to get this done in a day or two.

So it has the features that I asked about earlier? I know that many forums use IPB, though I've never been a member at such a site before believe it or not.

I would like to hear from web site Administrators that use IPB, since I'm not familiar (beyond having heard of it and knowing it's popular). Although I gather that it might be something to look into. I'm sure there must be a good reason why so many forums use it.

Hmm....that might be an idea. While I know about VBulletin Mods, I've never seen one that does what I was asking about earlier.

I wonder, is it that difficult to write my own? I don't really know PHP, though it's something that I should probably learn. Right now I know more about setting up and configuring a server.

I do know that the first feature (banning from specific forums) is one where plenty of others have an interest. This would give moderators greater control over their specific forums.

The second feature (non-Admins changing passwords), I don't know how many people would want that. In my case, right now I just can't think of anyone I'd trust with the job of Admin. But, I'm human and I'm fallible. Something could happen and I won't be on the forum for days. Adding additional forums or adding another VB skin can wait, changing passwords can't. Not if I want happy members.

That and well, if I have a forum I'd like to be able to have some time to participate in the capacity of a regular member as well.

You should be pretty comfortable with PHP before attempting a VB plugin. Also, you need to be familiar with the VB paradigm to make a good plugin.

Honestly, VB is the most extendable forum software I have seen. Plugins are most of the time truly "plug in"'s. Very rarely do you have to modify source code.

I could've sworn I had a vb mod that did exactly that a few years ago.

what you could do (out of the box) is:
admincp -> User Infractions -> Add New Infraction Group
Override with Permissions from Usergroup: Insert-New-Usergroup-Here.

You could repeat this for the main forums OR just create one usergroup and give that UG permissions to only view/post/etc in certain less serious forums.
