Re: How to re-establish ATA connectivity with MJ

Even if there was a way to do it, MJ would simply close the hole again. This has happened several times in the past due to users posting the "fix" in open forums. Not too bright.

I read a theory which made a lot of sense about why MJ did this: The dongle is proof of purchase. If connecting with an ATA was easy, we could buy MJ at Radio Shack, learn the SIP credentials, return MJ to Radio Shack, and merrily use MJ for free with our ATA.

The only way for an open ATA service to work is if it's sold exclusively by MJ (returns can be processed immediately to discontinue service), or there's a monthly subscription (so lack of payment can cause service to be terminated).

I hate to say it, but the dongleless solution probably suffers from the same problem. The only difference is that it will stop working when an upgrade occurs (every 6 months?). When an upgrade occurs you have to buy MJ retail, do the upgrade, redo the dongleless instructions, and return MJ.

I like dongleless because the dongle seems like the weak link in the chain. Too many stories of it failing, "broken storage," etc. If I only want to use a headset I shouldn't have to use that device. But, I suppose without it, people could scam MJ.

So, I wonder how long it will be until the softphone requires the dongle to be physically connected?

Mark

I for one (of many I'm sure) would be happy to pay a reasonable fee to use an ATA. That would be ideal. I know that MJ has "talked about it", but I've heard nothing stronger than that coming from them.
