[DIRECTV] H21 Now Network-Enabled!

Wow, what a surprise! I'd even forgot it had an Ethernet jack on the rear.
Haven't hooked it up to my router yet, but might try it later tonight....

So is this receiver now able to see shared media on the local network?

I hope they eventually allow streaming from a local DVR.

They do in beta now. (Actually I though it been rolled out public but apparently not yet)

From the H21 or are you referring from a PC, if the later already know about that and I use it often.

I used DirecTVPC too. Love it.

No, I was referring to MRV (multi-room viewing) from DVRs to stand-alone receivers. I don't have one to test anymore but I do know it was (has has been) in beta for sometime now.

Well, I plugged it into my network, and it says it's happy, but since it's only a receiver, and not a DVR, what good does it do? Will it replace the phone line so I can order a PPV from the remote?
I have my media server/DVR plugged directly into the TV, so no need for the H21 to act as an intermediary.

MRV has been in testing for a while now, and probably will be for a good while longer.

If the only DirecTV receivers you have are "H" series (e.g. no DVRs), then the network capability won't do you any good in the near term. Eventually you might be able to forego the phone line and be able to order PPV via network connectivity, but that probably won't be any time soon.

If you have one or more HR DVR or R22 SD DVRs, and H series receivers, and all are on the same network, you'll eventually be able to 'play' content recorded on any networked DVR from any other networked DVR or H series receiver - from what I understand. When these capabilities will be available to the general public is not currently known.

No, just the single H21 in my little place.
Sounds like they're planning on doing the same thing Verizon does. My girlfriend has one DVR, but we can play recorded content back on any of the other TV/boxes we have in the house.

I think their plan is much more sophisticated than that
But yes - the initial capability is what you stated.

Just tried to buy a PPV with the remote, but it said to call customer service.
Oh, well, I can wait.

That's interesting... I ordered 2 PPV last year and they were notified via the internet. In fact, my receivers have never been hooked up to a phoneline.

It's strange that it's not setup for the H2x series receivers yet.

I'm upgrading my home network to gigabit. Once we can stream across DVR's, it would be nice if DirecTV released a gigabit capable DVR.

Jeez, I never imagined the load my LAN currently gets. I'm starting to see the potential for even faster than gigabit one day ... ouch!

You're not 'streaming' media across DVRs - the client DVR is reading the encrypted data file on the remote DVR and then decrypting it for playback. The bandwidth required is tiny - GiGE connections on the receivers would be total overkill.

I'm streaming from DVR to PC, and from other media servers to other media clients some of which are PC's. Eventually DirecTV will permit one DVR to play the content of another DVR on the LAN IMO.

That's exactly what I'm talking about - and the bandwidth is minimal....

Are you sure about that? I thought it was using the same base of DLNA+DTCP that DirecTV2PC was using, and that the whole intent of the PC player was to test the media server on the HR2x machines to prepare for MRV.

@cruzio.com

Anybody know if you could use the network to change channels rather than the USB port?
