I have never had it suggest shows and downloads. Then again the DirecTV boxes generally do not have much in the way of ads other then the 2-3 scattered through out the guide and generally those are for DirecTV sponsored channels and events.

I don't believe it's any different that what's historically been collected via the phone connection - which is minimal and as sonofjay See Profile points out can be controlled from your account control panel at directv.com

They definitely do not suggest anything. "DirecTV Cinema" downloads movies to a portion of your DVRs hard drive that is reserved for DirecTV's use - but that "push" is universal - everyone gets the same stuff - there's nothing personalized about it.
