| Hmm wifi on ferries?
Ok, BC ferries has no wifi. Not even in the car line up before the boat. I was just reading how Seattle has now introduced wifi on their ferries using wimax, but not without 2 years of huge challenges.
Carnival cruise lines have wireless so why not BC ferries? Let's just say I'm thinking about jumping into the water (pun intended) with this one. What would be the best way to go about it? 3G? wimax?

Well, so far so good with the 3g stick on the water. Would anyone know how to get set up with a provider for a 3g modem for commercial purposes? Not just a stick from roger's or telus. |

All retail 3g plans are heavily capped with huge overage charges. |

I can't recall if it's 3G or not, but you used to be able to purchase a Linksys wireless router with a PC card slot for your cell phone modem card. Then if you really got into it, you could add a cell phone booster box to help with that cards RX signals to boost speed a bit. (would also help other people on boat)
It's a start anyway.
The Caps would be the problem though, that and reselling the service.
Depending on the ferry route. You may be better off shooting a 900Mhz signal to the ferry from the main land for service. |

IDK a thing about Canada's rules. Forgot about that part, but I thought they were close to ours.
There is a 900Mhz unlicensed area we use in the spectrum down here. I think you have it also. |

Vancouver, BC | About a year ago I followed briefly in the news about the spectrum being opened up to allow more bandwidth for competition. Do you recall? What's become of that? I forget all the details but I remember it was big news for new cell phone carriers. |

I would guess 700Mhz area. As the analog TV stations are finally turned off now. And switched to Digital in a different Freq range |

Yeah it WAS big news. Stephen Harper used the $4 billion raised in the auction to make the budget look good for one year. The big players scooped the majority of the spectrum, and the new players paid so damn much that when they fire up their first concern will be recapping the cost, not giving subscribers a deal. Compound that with the onset of tight money and the prospect of any real 'competition' is bleak on 3G.
Scratch that as a feed.
The ferry routes are over 20 miles, and wind through channels in the Gulf Islands.
I'd feed a couple repeaters on those islands with 5.8 from Victoria on the southern routes and from West Van on the Nanaimo/Sechelt route instead. |

ehh,
You can go for Altai A3, 802.11n Outdoor unit with USB dongle as backhaul.
So far, i have used them in buses. The problem is power...these AP work on PoE injector (HOLY it's AC!) and buses, only have DC...

We have done mobile solutions like this, both with 3G data cards with Mikrotik as well as WIFI solutions from towers! |
