BAINCH, I have a question pertaining to phone service/repair

First my modem is at acceptable levels, internet connection excellent.

Ok here's the problem/s:

- My incoming calls get dropped; phone rings, I answer, I get dial tone. The calling party loses ring tone, gets dial tone on their end as well. The second attempt to call I answer, call gets through ok. This has been a on/off issue for a couple years.

- I usually use the *69 call back feature to reach the calling party. (this has actually been quite convenient for screening calls heh-heh) Now this feature is down and I get a busy signal. I've had this problem once in the past. It was resolved at the head-end.

A service call is scheduled for July 6th.
Here my friend, is my question/s:

- Have you encountered this type problem in the past?
- What should I expect from this service call?

Thank you in advance for your time BAINCH.

I had that issue with a Motorola VOIP modem.

When I had them switch me to a RCA VOIP modem everything works great (and all of my answering machines work). The Motorola modem also needed to be hard reset every time the cable connection was disturbed by line maintenance. One of my answering machines also didn't work with the Motorola modem it didn't have enough resistance to break the dial tone (like your issue).

I feel for you because even if you pay for voice mail, the caller doesn't get to leave a message in that situation, they just get hung up on.

Very interesting indeed. I had a strong feeling the modem was the culprit. Thanks for the post.

question. if you DONT answer the phone does this still happen? asking because i had a similare issue. only when some one called the phone would never ring, but it did pick up. thing is. it was none of my equipment doing it. turns out it was a bad jack.

Have you looked at the modem levels yet?

"question. if you DONT answer the phone does this still happen?"
- Yes, when this issue exists, I try the *69 feature and still get the busy signal. That was corrected at the head office in the past, although the dropped call issue wasn't able to be resolved at that end.

The phone rings ok, even when I have an expected scheduled call coming in such as my broker call back. I can call out ok as well.
About it being jack/wiring related, this is what I was afraid of, although I have a gut feeling it's modem/ switching related.

Thank you for the post. I'm keeping this thread handy for the service tech to view.

Yes indeed, since I had an up-stream issue a couple years ago, I do check it regularly. I rarely check the log though, as everything has been working properly. I can't say whether or not the log entries have changed or varied from month to month:

*If the DHCP server failed to renew the lease on my modem's ip, excepting my in-coming phone calls, why does everything else work properly. Am I missing something here? Still seems to me to point to the modem as the culprit.

Thanks for posting.

My log looks the same as above, and always has. My service has been fine, so I would assume that these warning messages are just standard warnings regarding a single field in the DHCP string.

FWIW, BAINCH See Profile doesnt do service work.

I would try a modem swap as that is the only common denominator in your equation.

The thing I found out to look for is the number of T3's you get, Also watch power levels closely with phone modems. When you get return power levels going above 50 you will start having all kinds of problems. Usuall if you see a lot of repeat T3's that means that there is usually a bad connection somewhere and the headend can't see you. That is why you get reboots of the modem automaticly. These are just my observations and experiences and my dealings with a phone techs. Also if you are having troubles with the connections and have the phone also, bypass the tv and internet techs and go straight for the phone techs. In the long run you will get the line fixed quicker.

Oddly enough, everything is back to working order again. I suppose my experience with VoIP service hasn't been exactly perfect, as this problem has been on and off going. I probably will go back with a hard wired phone service again. The 5 buck saving just isn't worth the sweat.

Hey guys, thanks for posting and the advice.

Sorry, I've been away. If it happens again (or you just want me to check now) then PM me your MacID. There are several upstream statistics that can only be obtained at the headend or CMTS, you just can't see them on the cablemodem. I can also verify some regional transport information.

Oh hey no problem BAINCH, I did in fact take it for granted you were away. And man I hate to make changes in my phone service, so I'm going to maintain this service for the time being, hopefully for the life of my current account.

I figure the best time to take up your offer would be when/if the situation becomes unstable again. Because over the weekend and today it has never been better. In fact I've always had a slight amount of static in the background. It's as clear as a bell chime now.

Thank you for the reply, and the offer is much appreciated, hopefully I won't need the help.
