| Resetting 2 Wire 1000 HW
I got a very lightly used 2 Wire 1000 HW from a Goodwill store to use as a backup. It is in excellent condition. I am trying to erase the previous owner's settings on it. Is there anyway to do this? The modem does not have a reset button.
Some research has been conducted: It has the older 3.5.5 firmware on it. I am able to communicate with the device via either 172.xx.xxx.xxx or via typing "homeportal" in the browser. I know there's a work around but that applies only to the newer firmware, which allows one to put in keycode number before changing/verifying password.
I got far as to type in the temporary 15 minute code, upon ticking “forgetting password twice. I’ve copied it into where it's asked to do so. It says wrong code, even after manually typing it accurately several times? Am I stuck? Is there any way to conduct a master reset to factory settings on this thing? You may need to call 2wire tech support and give them the "special code" they will use this to generate a temporary password.
Another way was to use the wireless key to reset the password |

| I tried the suggestions in the URL listed by Chesire to no avail. The below steps cited by boncrop were followed precisely.
"So the trick is to connect the router and disconnect just the dsl line from the back of the router, by this way you can access the »gateway.2wire.net/management , now go there and go to reset and reset the damn thing or edit it, that will solve the problem, at least that worked for me, connect the dsl line again and have fun "
Upon disconnecting the DSL line, it still asks for the password before one could make any modifications to the modem. I could access the screen gateway.2wire.net/management but that's about it.
The idea of using the 10 digit wireless key didn't work either. I tried putting that in the password window, to no avail. It looks like as if I have to ring tech support or toss it. |

If you are a att customer att tech support should be able to assist you with this issue

| I am guessing this model is from around 2001. With that being said, SBC/SNET (at time) was using Speedstream modems. The first 2 wire I got from them was the HG 1801 G which arrived in early 2004. Do you think they'll have knowledge/support for this 1000 HW?
I don't know if this is true, some told me this model is one of the fastest modems that was ever put out, with better thoroughput than the newer 2 wires that came afterwards. One doesn't know if that's true since the 2 Wire 2700 D does go pretty well if it's set in routed LLC mode. |

Now I have another question: I know the firmware is old, running version 3.5.5. Is it feasible to upgrade this and if so, where can it be found?
I did look on the 2 wire site, and all they had was drivers for the USB port of the modem. One is aware there is a version 4.2 something (not sure exactly) someplace. Thank you in advance. |

| About the software..... you're not likely to gain much with a upgrade and there is the risk the modem can be rendered useless
I have a few questions.....
Does the 20 digit code ever change
Is the "temporary password" you were given still allow you to change the system password |

| Since this is a back up modem, and I have gotten it tuned in well to where I want it, upgrading the firmware is a lower priority now. As they say, If it's isn't broken, don't fix it.
To answer your questions: Before calling tech support today, I had a different 20 digit verifier code yesterday (didn't do anything then) to change the password than the one today. I don't recall all the digits, but know the code was different.
About the temporary password changing systemme password: Yes, it did allow this change. The temp password is an 8 digit code I had to enter, contaning letters and numerals. |

If you're referring to the 4.25.19 software, that's the factory installed software for the 2wire 2700HG-B
Your 2wire is the 1000HW if you must install different software
going above version 3.17.x is risky, because I don't think the software for the 1000 series ever got to 4.x.x

I also have a pair of other 2 wires, the 2700 HG-B, and 2700 HG-D which came from Q West. I don't particularly care for the HG-D which seems to be slower than the B. Even though the 2700 D had to be modifed a bit with its VCI settings, it's still slower.
The firmware at moment is 3.5.5. No complaints about that, as this modem seems to load just well as the 2700 HG-B. If I have to nit pick and nag, it would be that when doing web based e mail from Yahoo, these seem to take a tad longer to send out, but not a real issue. Otherwise, it performs well, and speed test performance is very close to, or on par with newer equipment, if not a miniscule amount slower (we're talking about one bit or maybe 2 bits slower, no more). |

This 1000 HW comes in handy as a back up. As mentioned in the opening post, it was brought from a Goodwill store for that purpose. My previous back up was the 2 Wire HG 2700 D, which I don't really care for, given its speed fluctuations. The main modem is the 2 Wire HG 2700 B, which from my experience has better thoroughput, and is more stable than the D model.
I had a 1000 SW a few weeks ago, which was sold to a PC shop. It was terribly slow comparing to this. I am guessing the HW is the high powered relative, with better thoroughput.
I have fooled around with many other modems before. Of the dozens I've tried, only one was bricked. It was a D Link 504 something that stopped during an upgrade download. |

In answer to the question of the 20 digit code changing if you change the password, yes it changes. The vendor (ATT support) has a look-up table based on the 20 digi
t codes generated. I had to do this once and looked at the 20 digit code to see if it was changed after the password change. |
