Ultra users please read regarding d/l speeds.

Has anyone noticed that their download speeds on occasion drop to the mid 70's to 80's for days on end?

For the last 4 to 5 days I was getting on average about 80 or so down. This was throughout the day and night. Now this morning I am back to 101+. This is not the first time this has happened.

Field Ops came over this morning but speeds were back to normal so they really couldn't do much at my house.

Field Ops feels 75 down is acceptable so I don't think they will do much for me. I would think a range of 90-101 would be good advertised limits for Ultra even though anything lower does fit into the 'up to' category.

I just want to see if other Ultra users are indeed getting the advertised max, or near it, more or less consistently.

btw... does your modem Link light blink constantly even when nothing is being transmitted? Mine is always the same blink rate no matter if I am downloading/uploading or doing nothing.

Yes. I test 2-3 times a day. Speeds have been as high as 103/14.5, and as low as 75 down, but it is usually in the 90's most of the time. Link light on modem always blinks.

Just had Ultra installed at my business. We received the Cisco 851 router with a 5 pack of static IP's. When the speed was checked out of the modem itself it was about 95 Mb/s. Then it was checked at the router and it dropped to 60 Mb/s. CV tech told me this was within the acceptable range. What, 35 Mb/s bottleneck at the router. This is not acceptable by any means. The Cisco is a 10/100 router. How could they give there customer inadequate equipment? I've called several times and they told me "I just have to live with it until they roll out a new gigabyte router.

Their Web page makes it clear that if you have a static IP you will not get full performance, if you do not want the service at a lower performance no one forced you to get it. (read below for what the web site now says and a different viewpoint based on that)

They have many users who do not have a static IP, and it would be ridiculous to say they should not allow these users to get the service since there is not a router available for those with a static IP. They are testing routers which supply the full service. See

Should they *not* allow those who have a static IP to have the choice to get Ultra with the lower level of service, of course not, they should have the choice. Should they offer a lower price, that is a choice CV has the right to make since they have informed those users of the lowered performance and they have the right to charge what they want for the service and if you don't like the charge for the service to be provided, you have the right to not get the service.

Interestingly enough I believe their web page has changed and now says

said by OOL Site :

"Due to configuration of available equipment, Static IP customers will not experience speeds over 100 Mbps."
So if you are only getting 60mbps you would have a complaint based on that language and who knows they may have a new router.

Can I ask a question? Why complain about only getting 80 down? Thats still 40-50 more then boost.

Also how many people on your network downloading things will slow down speeds and things like that .

I think for Boost anything above the Regular Tier Speed and for Ultra anything above the Boost Tier Speed is acceptable to OOL and it does kind of make sense albeit I don't like it but that's a different story.

PS: Those with Ultra: what would you do when there are 5 or more Ultra users on your node; do you seriously expect to get 90mbps+

In speaking with the Field Ops supervisor he told me that he went to his boss and asked what d/l speed would be deemed unacceptable for Ultra. ~60 and below was the answer.

If they are giving you such a low number for a relatively new service which has very few subscribers at the moment, just imagine what this number would be when more people subscribe to it. It kind of supports my guesstimate and I wouldn't be surprised if anything above 40mbps(Boost's max is 38mbps) becomes acceptable as well in the near future.

Just FYI, OOL changed there TOS 3 days ago, as told to me by a OOL Field Eng., to reflect the problems using the static IP routers. I guess they had to cover there back sides because of all the complaints. Just did a speed check at speedtest.net and 14 Mb/s down and 14 Mb/s Up. What the heck?

That's not correct. The field engineer is misinformed. The TOS was last updated May 11th according to this site, and it has the Static IP warning already included:

My speeds have been pretty consistent as have my ping times which are usually 4 or 5ms. The link light is always blinking for me as well. During peak times even, my speeds have been solid, sometimes dropping into the mid 90s on the downstream and 13.5 or so on the upstream.

I've seen speeds drop to 75 on speed tests for periods of time, and I can barely break 50 anymore on the tests on this site, but my ACTUAL download speeds have been consistently high. Don't rely on just the speed tests - they're not always accurate.

I would expect that once some designated number of Ultra users are on the node, that they would swap the Boost 609Mhz frequency for a 3rd Ultra Frequency (627Mhz) or add the 627Mhz frequency as the 4th Bonded Frequency (right now there are only 3 Bonded Frequencies - 609, 615, and 621). Even if you ignore the congestion due to sharing one of the Bonded Frequencies with Boost Users AND assume that all frequencies can deliver 38Mbs the current 3 Bonded channels can just barely deliver the claimed 101Mbs speeds (38*3= 114Mbs).

I usually rely on ftp test1024 file downloaded from ool to get a more accurate picture of my speed. To be honest speedtest.net and the ftp download are pretty much in sync when it comes to download speeds. I've never had any upload issues, usually a solid 15 never below 14 for me.

Last night I had a weird thing happen. Downloading from a speedtest site and the FTP site brought my system to a crawl. Mouse was very jerky and CPU was ~90%. Reboots didn't help but my startup this morning saw this disappear with great speeds.

I wonder if the problem is the first bonded channel which is Boost. Obviously they are more Boost users then Ultra. Congestion on the Boost channel could be what's lowering my speeds.

I also was told by CV personnel that more people have ordered Ultra then was expected. That fourth channel might be needed sooner then expected.

You cant expect 100/15 up all the time on a shared cable network. all it takes is for 2 ultra users on the same node to download something big at the same time.

80 down is nothing to laugh at. Tradewind was your speed test done with nothing downloading in the background and only your machine doing anything on the net?

Nothing was running other then the test I was using. In addition I do not use a firewall or AV software at all. Nor was anyone else using their computers on my LAN at the times of the test.

One thing I forgot to mention is I am running Windows 7 build 7260 x86. Great OS IMO.

The problem is that you are paying for 101+.

With that $300 activation fee on top of the monthly they'd better deliver close to advertised speeds.
