 My crappy 'green' setup

Runs, but doesn't run great...

I recently decided to setup a table for my laptop; to get away from my big, power-sucking desktop..., yes, it's a quad-core, SLI, 1000w psu, #s of HDs too....

Desktop = 350-650 watts (not including monitors and peripherals..)
Laptop = 40-60 watts!

That looks really cramped and awkward.

Your desktop probably wasn't using anywhere near 1000w, I'd bet more like 300-400 (and that's generous!)

Hrm.. ierno I guess that's a bit of a blanket statement, but I'd plug in a kill-a-watt type device and see what you get, I have a stinking suspicion it's in the neighborhood of 500 or less, unless you're playing crysis and overclocking every last bit of juice!

yah it is a bit cramp. I mention 350-650w, obviously not 1000w all the time.

get yourself a Kill-A-Watt before making drastic measures.

you would be surprised how little a computer plus all monitors can use.

my Bunn Coffee maker costs me more per month then my computer.

and my desktop has 4 disk drives, big monitor, dual core, 4 gigs ram, all that jazz.

computers generally only use above 250 watts power when things kick in like playing a big game. other than that like surfing in windows they don't use much.

look into it.

Actually I have kill-a-watt that's why I can estimate the watts being used.

oh god, i fing hate this green crap.

If you are using more power then you should, reduce because it is costing you to much money .. not because you think some polar bear is going to have to take a longer swim.

The reason shouldn't concern you, as it's his setup.

"oh god, i fing hate" people who dump on people who practice conservation instead of wasting power, water and resources. Yay for inefficiency!!!

On a more serious note, did it occur to you that maybe the OP did this "green setup" to save money on his electric bill?

Well, if he said, "low power setup" i would have said nothing.

But he said "green" green implies more then just low power.

Well, the term green has been abuse to death so that it means just about anything that could have a net positive environmental effect, even common sense stuff like turning off lights.
