x264 and Intel 4500MHD

I got me a hp dv5 w/ 4500MHD chipset.. it's dual core 2.0 ghz, 4 gb ram.. vista 64 bit..

The problem is it can play x264 decently if it's 720p.. but if it's 1080p they skip go out of sync etc.. I've tried different codec packs and drivers for the 4500MHD but neither seems to make a dent in good playback..

The only thing I was thinking the other day was maybe if I went back to xp.. it would lower the overhead and maybe they'd play without skipping..

Anyone have advice.. is this laptop just too underpowered.. I need a onboard GPU/gaming card?

I have an X4500HD (same model as you, different name) on a DG45ID board in my HTPC and I can play x264 1080p content just fine. What codec pack are you using?

I use ffdshow-tryouts. When I play 1080p content my wimpy Pentium Dual-Core 2.5Ghz sits at 5%-10% usage on Vista. Update to the latest driver from Intel, uninstall all codec packs, reboot, install ffdshow-tryouts and let me know if that helps. Are you playing MKV? If so, install the haali media splitter too.

I typically use k-lite.. yes playing mkv.. sometimes I try straight blue-ray content via .mts and I pause on that too..

Trying removing all your codec packs and installing the two I mentioned.

Your processor/RAM are certainly capable. I'm guessing it's your onboard video that's the bottleneck here. Many times, only the most expensive high-end multimedia notebooks (such as those with BD players/burners) excel at playing these.

[EDIT] According to Intel, the 4500MHD is capable of playing 1080p and BD stuff, so I guess the codec thing just might be your issue. Keep us informed.

Nope.. still skips.. may be less worse now..

I guess if you want me to be clear.. I'm playing it on a 1080p HDTV.. but it doesn't even seem to resize without skipping..

You definitely have something else going on because I play 1080p MKV and Blu-Ray (both discs and M2TS files) without issue. How much RAM have you allocated to the card through the BIOS?

There is no way to allocate ram in the BIOS.. according to the spec's 768 mb of ram can be dynamically allocated whatever that means..

I am consistently having playback problems of 1080p on lower end machines.. I can't get a 3.0 ghz p4 w/ 64 mb ati card to do it either.. however my quad core q6600 w/ 9600gt is fine..

My test movie.. paused at various scenes and was fine at others.. of course when it paused.. the audio went out of sync.. as usual.. and some frames were lost..

I have tried my manufacturer’s driver and the latest which says 04/2009 or so but dates as 12/2008 in device manager..

I assume unless you have any other suggestions.. it’s time to call it what it is which is just not possible.. with the 4500mhd and I need a decent gpu..

That is odd, I have a setting on my Intel board that allows me to tell it how much RAM to dedicate to the card. I have issues if I set it below 256MB, so I'm wondering if that is perhaps your issue as we have the same card.

1080p on a P4 without some sort of GPU offload (which a 64MB Radeon definitely wouldn't support) will never happen, but on your 4500 it should be possible. However, being an HP, perhaps they disabled that BIOS option.

There is one last thing you can try that I had good luck with. Download the Vista Codec Pack and install it. Make sure to uninstall any other codec packs first. Then open it as Administrator, go to the H264 tab and enable DXVA. If that doesn't work I'd explore a dedicated GPU.

Well, there is a BIOS update among others.. I'll give that and your codec pack a try shortly..

The BIOS update may be promising. MOst reviews of the 4500HD card revised their updated (terrible performance) after a BIOS was released. Once they updated the new BIOS, it solves their problems.

CoreAVC isn't going to fix choppy video. It's a fast codec, but not fast enough to resolve his issues I doubt.

It allowed me to play 720p .mkv files on an old P4 system that were previously unwatchable with VLC. It's a great codec and I guarantee the OP will see improvement with it.

720p is not 1080p. The OP has much more serious issues trying to play 1080p. CoreAVC won't take choppy video and out of sync audio and suddenly make it smooth unless the previous codecs he was trying to use are not up to task. The ffdshow codecs are perfectly suited to play 1080p video smoothly. I play 1080p on the same video card as the OP, using the ffdshow codecs, with a slower processor so there is no reason his system should exhibit the behavior that it does. CoreAVC may provide a 5% or 10% improvement, but 5% or 10% won't fix the issues he is describing.

I'm not saying CoreAVC isn't a great codec, but his money would be much better invested in a new video card than spending $15 for a codec.

He can try the trial version of CoreAVC and see if there's improvement. I know it has worked for other people trying to play 1080p files, even with older hardware.

Absolutely. I'd recommend he give it a shot before purchasing a video card too.

Coreavc is in k-lite.. not necessary.. I can't purchase a video card.. I have no choice but to get a new laptop w/ a decent gpu.. once I've done the last few tests..

Well it seems like a BIOS update.. fixed my major problems.. my test movie is no longer jerky on the sections it was before.. and while I still have frame rate loss and out of sync issues.. (like do to fast forwarding) it resyncs within 1-5 minutes..

Now maybe I'll try playing a straight .mts (guessing it will be laggy.. got the blueray "Into the Bluy" playing nicely though)

I had problems before playing the .mts of "Lakeview Terrance" and while I guess that problem still exists.. I will have to double check.. but basically 1080p x264 thus far = good.. and I'm guessing I can even throw on k-lite now and that's not big deal vs. your suggested codecs..

Excellent. K-Lite is a good codec pack that's been around for a while. ffdshow-tryouts + haali media splitter will play almost everything out there and is a bit cleaner, so you can't go wrong either way. I just prefer to keep unnecessary codecs off my system.

Regardless, I'm glad you got it sorted out!
