Does WOW throttle speeds?

Just curious, has WOW ever been known to throttle speeds? I have the 8 Mbps connection and usually when I max out my connection I average around 1,000-1020 KB/sec. The past few days it has been averaging around 800 KB/sec. Was I just getting lucky with the higher speeds or is it worth a call?

Hmm, maybe I should try "power cycling" my modem/router and see if that does anything.

If WOW detects an abnormal amount of outgoing e-mail or other malware-like activity, they will throttle your speed until you call them to confirm it's been cleared. But they'll slow it down way more than what you're seeing.

Well, I've done everything I could think of on my end but I'm still not seeing a change. I'll put a call into WOW and see what's up.

They seem to throttle. I signed up for 8M/1M which I seemed to get the first two days of service. Since then I've been getting about 3.2M/250K or worse... as low as 2M/230K. Awful.

Tech support had no idea what Linux is and told me, "I'm sorry, but we don't support links [sic]." When I told her that the O/S does not matter it's the connection that matters she repeated the above statement. I told her I would fire up a Windows box just so she could do her test, she said okay. In actuality all she wanted was for me to ping a couple of IPs then to go to a speed test website, all things I could have done on my Linux boxes.

If you're going to hire tech support, you should hire techs not script readers.

Speed test website? That in no way gauges you're actual speed since it deals with such small files. And yeah, I think I may have tripped some sort of auto-throttle. I haven't been keeping track of how much I've downloaded recently but I think it's easily over 200GB in the last month.

And my speed has gone down further. Now it's at around 500-600 KB/s. Haven't had time call them though. If I am being throttled, so be it; I'd just like to know for certain.

I just uploaded 156GB to a Mozy account over the past couple weeks. Never throttled me.

Interesting service. It truly is a backup only application. After 30 days, it will delete the files that are no longer on your machine. It synchronizes. So, you can't use it as additional online storage.

I've decided to go with Elephant drive.

Thanks for bringing this topic up.
