| [Rant] Ammunition Availability
Dammit, why can't ammunition resellers keep ammunition in stock? Whats wrong with people that they have to buy up bulk ammunition from retail outlet stores (Academy Sports, mom-and-pop gun stores, etc...). If you want bulk then go online or to a catalog and purchase bulk but stop buying 30 boxes of 5.56 or .40 at a local retail store... greedy bastards.
In addition to that, whats up with there being NO ammunition available for purchase? Federal .40 caliber Hydra-Shok and generic .40 caliber target rounds are on back order for months from most websites (I stopped checking after I got to website # 24).
I guess I'll have to result to learning how to reload ammunition to supply my own demand for hot lead.

| reply to exocet_cm It's a pain, that's for sure. I usually call a few different Academy locations on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays when their ammo shipments come in. By doing this, I'm usually able to secure a Remington 250 round Mega-Pack in .40 S&W and 9mm. I usually have 2-3 boxes of each on hand at any time, so I'm not stockpiling or hoarding too badly.
You can try shopping online as well: »www.ammunitiontogo.com/catalog1/···fmj-ammo
These guys ship from Texas (50 miles northwest of Houston), so you should have it in Louisiana within 2 days. Their pricing is hit/miss depending on their stock level. Just two weeks ago, they were selling Russian .40 FMJ steel boxes for $30!
BTW: I stopped to buy gas and take a piss in New Orleans last week. The area sure hasn't changed much since Katrina. -- irc.removed.us - #dslr | DSLR Phishtracker | Email: removed@dslr.net |

| reply to exocet_cm Reloading is your best bet. Providing the components are available. If you can, locate an experienced fellow reloader nearby to show you the process. Start off with a single stage press from any of the major mfg.'s. Then once you're comfortable, and if ammo is consumed in large enough quantities to merit it, advance to a progressive reloader. I love my Dillon XL650. They have a kick ass warranty. At the time, it was the only reloader that could keep up with my nephews appetite for shooting. |

Talked to my brother-in-law today, checking on availability of components. Seems as if they too are in short supply. Still, it will be much cheaper to roll your own. Not to mention pretty satisfying to see how a particular firearm shoots with various bullet types and weights combined with this or that measurement of powder. Here's some snaps of our reloading set up. Sorry about the quality...crappy cell phone pics. |

1 edit | reply to exocet_cm I feel your pain. 9mm is almost impossible to find at a decent price. You'd think that the damn things are made out of gold... I dont usually have any problem finding 7.62 in both 39 and 54 just because the Russians made tons of the stuff Good luck man! -- Does Microsoft mean small and squishy? |

But you know it always scares me when I'm buying cheap reloaded ammo from hillbilly joe and sons. I don't want my expensive gun to explode into pieces because they packed the shit with too much powder.. |

These guys supposedly have pretty good service - a friend of mine buys from them all the time and has never complained. I just noticed that some of my hollow point rounds probably need replaced soon, so I'll probably be placing an order with them sometime this month.
Please post back and let us know how your experience was.

I don't want my expensive gun to explode into pieces because they packed the shit with too much powder.. I actually don't think any of it was reloaded but I'm no expert, Made in Russia....I've shot ~100 rounds of Brown Bear 9MM through my gun and had no issues, I heard Brown Bear is "dirty" but I clean my guns after every trip and never noticed the gun being anymore dirty with Brown Bear then with Winchester, American Eagle/Federal or whatever
I bit on the 9MM but didn't get the 7.62, Most single boxes of 7.62 were ~$7.95 for 20 rounds(Brown Bear which I've also shot through an AK47 without issue)...I might pick up a 500 or 1000 round pack next time around
You can reload FMJ cases can't you?...Might get a press someday...Delaying because I don't know where to start, What presses are bad which are good. |

| Depends on the case, not the construction of the projectile in regards to reloading. With that said, it IS possible to reload either berdan or boxer primed cases. But you wont find too many reloaders using berdan primed cases. As I mentioned in an earlier post, stick to one of the major mfg.'s of reloading equipment, using a single stage press. Less apt to make mistakes that way. Attention to detail is a must. I repeat... attention to detail is a must. Various books on reloading are available, but try to learn and work with one who's experienced in it. Then try it. |
