Older System better FPS?

As I have been reading through these forums I have noticed several posts where people give their system specs and their FPS in certain games...mainly WoW. I have an almost 3 year old Alienware Area 51 laptop and I am getting over 2 times the FPS as these newer/better systems. I average 61 FPS at almost any given time except in main cities where I drop a bit into the 40's. The main thing I noticed is that I am using XP and the other systems are using Vista. Is there really that much of a difference between the 2 operating systems as to where the FPS could be decreased that significantly? I know Vista had it's issues but I didn't think they were that severe if this is the case. I am in the process of building a new rig and was going to go with Vista Ultimate but I am now 2nd guessing that and opting back to XP until 7 is released and stable. Any suggestions?

Re: Older System better FPS?

You must be missing some detail such as in game settings etc.

You couldn't explain double the frame rate as OS related.
At this late stage Vista doesn't perform significantly differently from XP. There were driver issues early on but they aren't such an issue now.

By the time you are ready to build it will be close to windows 7 release.

Your screen resolution could be a factor.

Dolp...That didn't even cross my mind! I need to stay outta the sun a little more. I think my resolution is at 1440x900. I would have to double check but I am almost positive that is it.

Have you considered that the older games were designed with XP in mind? I know BF2 frames better with XP than vista.

Screen resolution and comparing two different WOW. People often say WOW when they are referring to WOW and its expansions. Wrath of the Lich King is much more demanding than non-expansion WOW and you have to be more specific when comparing two PC/notebook platforms in FPS.

Re: Older System better FPS?

I play WoW with all the expansions and about 20 addons. I'm at work now so I will have to post the system specs tomorrow.
I have already decided that I am going with Vista Ultimate 64. If I find it to be that horrible I will just take one of my XP disks and install that.
