Field Day 2009

So how'd it go for those who participated? My club (URAC K6AA) ran 6A from Angel's Gate Park in San Pedro. Early results were over 1500 for the 20M CW station, and about 1000 for the 20M phone station. I didn't hear what the other stations reported. Our GOTA station was swamped with new hams, and inactive hams for the first time, and was cranking out contacts like crazy. I ran the satellite station and made several contacts on each one of the birds that were visible during FD. The International Space Station either wasn't active for the "good" passes, or the passes were too low in elevation for the West coast. I heard they had the cross-band repeater running, and one of the crew members got on to hand out a few voice contacts. I also blew out the transistor that supplies power-up-the-coax for my external 2M preamp by connecting my 2M bandpass filter to the radio *before* checking to see if the filter was DC grounded. It was, and I'll be repairing my FT-847 this week. Next year I'm going to run a separate cable to the preamps for the DC power!

It was slow for us. We ran 3A QRP. I spent a lot of time on 80 looking for field day contacts. Most of what I heard on 80 was old farts complaining about their bunions and bragging about their tomater gardens.

I don't have the totals but the initial guess is around 2400-2500 Q's for our 4F station.

We had an issue once it got dark that didn't help. We were at an EOC building/lot and there was a light outside that kicked in and caused S9 noise on most of the machines. The noise went away when the light was on, but it was cycling every couple of mins and when it was out or not fully on, we could only hear S9+ stations. So from about 8pm to 6am we had to deal with that.

It was a blast but I'm exhausted. Was there from 8am Sat through 4pm Sun for setup/tear down and all operations in between. Got about 3 hours sleep in my car between 3am and 6am Sun morning.

20m SSB was very good as was 40m SSB and CW. 6m was the station I went to when I wanted to relax. We had less then 75 Q's and almost all except 5 were in the local area. Right when we were getting ready to shut down there was a short opening to FL but it was dead most of the weekend, at least for us.

Crashed after I got home and had a shower and dinner. We'll see what I feel like later in the day, Can't wait for next year.

Re: Field Day 2009

We had a good amount of contacts on 75/80 with the brunt of our contacts being on 40 with what appeared to be NVIS. 20 meters was dead as a wedge for most of FD with very high noise floors at S8 or more. Eventually, towards the end, 20 meters was a little better and we were getting small pile-ups by camping & calling. I did get DX on 20 into Italy.

10, I don't think we had a single contact there. 15 meters, we could hear the west coast but no major QSOs there.

Check you logs for W4V to see if you worked us. We were 3D AL.

73 and hope you had fun, I know I did. Got about 4 hrs sleep. 2xFT900's 1xFT990 was the gear.
