| Just a quick question about FreeNAS
Well I was just curious has anyone here use FreeNAS on their network? If they have please some feedback will be great... or should I just go for a window-base home server.
Ideally I just need this machine to FTP, Stream media to 2-3 computers, and P2P. In addition, what a good specs of a computer to do all that smoothly? |

I've got a couple Win 2k (one pro, one server) boxes that do just that, along with an ubuntu box (which used to be the second 2k server and primary p2p box). All three are sub-2GHz, one Sempron and two Athlons, and only the Sempron has over 1GB of RAM, the other two are less.
The 2k Pro box sits under the TV in the cubby where the VCR used to be, playing movies stored on either one of the other two machines or on its own drive. On occasion, I've had one box serving up movies to two computers at once. Never had occasion to stream to three, but I have no doubt that it'd work.
Though I've upgraded to gigabit, I was doing the same when I was still running 100Mbit. Also, all three of these machines are about as budget as can be, even for the time period when they were built. So yeah, what you want isn't very demanding, and you probably already have a box lying around that can do it.

I'm running FreeNAS on a Celeron 2.8Ghz with 1GB of RAM. Works great streaming media, and serving files to all my machines. |

You can get a free 120 day trial version from MSFT. If you decide to purchase a licensed copy later you simply do a server reinstall which upgrades the OS to the paid version and keeps your data file in place.

I use FreeNAS.
its a core duo with 1 gig of ram, spare cpu I had laying arround after upgrading my desktop.
I have 4x 1.5TB drives in it in raid 5.
it works great, FTP works, streaming, sharing etc.
the freenas OS itself I have it on a usb stick so no wasting a partition/diskspace.
to backup freenas itself its a simple XML file which makes management/going to a new PC very easy. so no need to recreate settings/accounts.
Freenas Rocks.
