Describe the difference between connecting a computer to a DSL modem via USB and connecting a computer to a DSL modem via Ethernet. Do you have an opinion on which connection type is most reliable? |

Simple answer, most routers, which you should be using for safety reasons, only support Ethernet. |

To me USB is fine for a single device, more than one device you need a network connection like ethernet. There are many different ways to connect to a network, USB is just an option. |

Ethernet is most universal and works with any OS. USB can be more OS specific depending upon driver.
I used Linux on an old PC for years as pppoe/firewall/router, one nic to 5360 bridge modem, 2nd nic for LAN, and 3rd nic proxy arp'd to that with wireless AP. Nics 2 & 3 worked together as one LAN. |

I do have a quick question for you. If someone were getting 4.8 - 5.2Mbps / download speeds out of a possible 6Mbps on ATT using built-in ethernet, could they expect the same performance using USB?

Depending on the type of ethernet adapter the USB could be a faster connection. Ethernet can be connected at 10Mbps/100Mbps/1000Mbps, potentially the 10Mbps could slow down your connection depending on local network activity. Likely though someone would no be running a home network at 10Mbps these days.
The speed you are getting is very common for Elite speedtest and should be the same using USB. |
