[OK] Cox Modem Swap Program?

Today I got a call from Cox telling me I need to replace my old D-link DCM202 modem with a newer model. The caller had zero tech knowledge and couldn't tell me why the change or what model I will receive for $10.00. What gives? I am in the Oklahoma City area.

Well whoever it was is correct because that modem is no longer on the cox modem support list.
Anyways if i was you i would call Cox CS back and ask them whats needs to be done, and what modem you will be getting. Because without a newer supported modem, you could lose your internet connection because of the modem no longer being supported.

Edit: here is a image of the support list since i couldn't get the link to work properly.

I'm sure Cox will send me one on the list, but I don't understand the sudden issue with the DCM202s. I've used them trouble-free for a long time. Too bad they're not going DOCSIS 3.0.

Well you could upgrade to D3 modems, but that your choice. Anyways that modem probably was only a Docsis 1.x modem, and cox is trying to move all there stuff to atleast D2 everywhere.

It's a Docsis 2.0 modem, but cox choose not to approve it for D2. Omaha's modem upgrade where done earlier and still haven't seen any improvement.

Sorry they did not give you better information. The reason there is a need to swap out the modem is because your modem will not reach all the speeds available on the Cox network. Also, to be able to offer additional services like DOCSIS 3.0 some modems must be taken off the network.
I think you will be pleased with your internet service performance after you swap out your modem.

He answered your question. That modem is an older model in which it will not reach the speeds available on the Cox network. Also, there has been a large push to get the non-DOCSIS 3 modems out as Cox prepares to launch DOCSIS 3 in the near future.

Well thats good, and hopefully they are sending you a motorola modem, because they are one of the best brands of modems.

Motorola would be great, but for ten bucks I really can't lose.

the SB5101 is not a Docsis 3.0 modem either.

Not to put words into his mouth, but I think he meant modems lower than 2.0. Which does not answer your question since your modem was 2.0, no?

Great success! High five!

I got my new Scientific Atlanta DPC2100 modem this morning and installed it. Without any tweaking, a speedtest on Speakeasy Dallas shows me at 23,008 kbps down and 2,843 up. I am very pleased with my Cox High Speed Internet, and have been for over 10 years now.

Thanks to everyone who commented.

Just as a point of interest, the highest download speed I ever saw on my connection happened when I was using a DCM-202 modem.

I just ordered the Scientific Atlanta DPC2100 modem today through cox. I was just wondering what the installation process involved?

It's just a matter of changing the cables and knowing your Cox account number and pin number or the last 4 of your SSAN. It comes with a DVD but I didn't need to use it.

Thanks for the response theavenger1, It sounds easy enough. I just didn't want to have to run a setup cd and install any cox add-ons. I noticed the DPC2100 has cable modem access protection. Do you know anything about that, and are you running your new modem into a router?

I suspect the access protection is just to protect the ISP from unauthorized use, I don't know anything about it. I am using the same D-Link router I used before the new SA modem. It was a seamless transition for me.
