[Hockey] Official UFA trade thread

So as not to clutter up the "draft" thread, lets put our July 1st deals in here.

I'll start off with a tasty tidbit that was talked about on Sportsnet earlier (as a possibility). Calgary sings Bowmeester. To clear cap space, they trade Phaneuf to Ottawa for Heatly.

This could be a potential jackpot for Ottawa. Get rid of a high priced player who doesn't want to play for them, and get a young solid defenseman in return. Pair him up with Cowen, and that is a defense to be reckoned with. And if Heatly though Clouston was "tough on him", I can't wait to see what he thinks of Sutter. Sutter will kick his ass if he gets out of line.

I thought Gomez would have been a good fit for the Kings or Ducks.... or even the Panthers....

Heatley to Oilers for Penner, Cogliano and Smid.

Eklund, The Score and Sportsnet say it's a done deal, TSN and RDS say no.

Heatley did not waive his no-movement clause.

Sutter pulls it off and actually signs Bouwmeester. 5 years - $6.6 million a year.

This deal, as a Leafs fan, really pisses me off. Burke kept saying Pronger and JayBo had to get traded before the market opened up for Kaberle. Bullshit. The Flames, who have such little cap room that they had to play with 16 skaters at times last year, traded Jordan Leopold and a 3rd round pick to Florida for the chance to negotiatiate with JayBo before the UFA season started. So, Burke, are you telling me that you couldn't have done the same deal? You saying the Panthers wouldn't have rather had Kaberle than Leopold? The Leafs have the cap room to afford a player like Bouwmeester.

Imagine JayBo and Schenn on the blueline. I'm not saying that every good player has to come to the Leafs. But, this is the kind of creative deal we expect out of Burke. At least show us you're trying.

Godd job Mr. Sutter. At least you're doing whatever it takes to make your team better immediately. You've out-Burked Burke.

Burke is focused on the Sedin sisters and vice versa.
Sutter made a terrific move on the Boumeester deal. Probably shot a lot of teams down who were waiting for the UFA market to open.

Burke trading for Bouw wouldn't assure that he'd have signed him.
I'd prefer not giving up assets for a player that could walk away a few days later with nothing to show for it.

I'm glad he didn't waive it as that's a crappy trade from Ottawa's end of things IMO. Penner is an over-paid under-achiever since he signed that deal with Edmonton and I'd rather not have to pay that much for that little in return.

i agree...while it would have been great to see Bowmeester in TO, that move is very risky, and in many cases, trading for the "rights" to a player doesn't work out...good job with Sutter pulling it off...the question is, does Phaneuf go and where?

The Sedins have re-signed with the Canucks 5 years for 6.1 million. The two are reliable, low maintenance, loyal and get the points. A good signing.

looking at the "big names" available, Komisarek seems to be the only one i would look at.

Y'know all these people yelling for Burke's head because so far he won't sign the sexy big name free agents miss the point.

Rebuilding the Leafs isn't a "one or two free agent signings" type deal at this point. The Leafs need time to grow as a team and plopping in a big money free agent onto such a team is a waste of time & talent IMO.

Hell, any smart UFA stays the hell away from Toronto for at least another year to see how well Burke can rebuild the team.

Give Burke a few years before saying that he's done nothing to improve the team, UFA's should not be seen as a panecea, remember the Leafs used to do that, look where it got them

Hey, I get the whole "be patient" and rebuild. I want that. I want a dominant team for years. But, when one of the building blocks could have been had very, very cheaply (Bouwmeester), I think Burke really missed the boat on that one. JayBo is 25 years old. He and Schenn could be the blueline anchors for a decade.

I agree there was a risk that JayBo wouldn't have signed, and frankly we obviously don't know the back room shenanigans going on. Maybe JayBo asked to go to the Flames, being an Alberta boy and all, but still, it doesn't appear Burke even tried.

Instead of having press conferences announcing he's going to trade up to grab a pick nobody is ever going to give him, why not do something.

I'm all about patience. I want this team to be built right with a core of exceptional young players. JayBo could have been one of those. The Leafs cleared salary to give them room for guys like this. I'm even prepared to wait until next year when Nash and Kovy are UFA's. The Leafs may have $30 MILLION in cap space by that time.

Phaneuf isn't going anywhere.

Well, that's the hope around here anyways. Bouwmeester, Phaneuf, Sarich, and Regher. That is as dominating a defense corps as any in the NHL.

Jaybo was never coming to the Leafs, pretty sure they weren't on his list.

Rumour has Hossa going to the hawks. They don't have plans on resigning the Bulin Wall, so would they use the extra space to get Havlat as well?

Leafs add some toughness in Colton Orr...four years, 1 million per year...that should help out in the toughness department, because the Leafs don't really have anyone since they traded Belak.
