VirtualBox 3.0.0 released
June 30, 2009
Sun today released VirtualBox 3.0.0, a major update introducing symmetric multiprocessing (SMP) in virtual machines as well as much improved 3D support. See the ChangeLog for details.
Presently, VirtualBox runs on Windows, Linux, Macintosh and OpenSolaris hosts and supports a large number of guest operating systems including but not limited to Windows (NT 4.0, 2000, XP, Server 2003, Vista, Windows 7), DOS/Windows 3.x, Linux (2.4 and 2.6), Solaris and OpenSolaris, and OpenBSD.
....the only professional-quality virtualization solution that is also Open Source Software.

VirtualBox 3.0.0 might not work as expected with linux guests, like Ubuntu.. Linux users should wait a while before updating, or back up their linux VDIs beforehand. |

A "professional-quality virtualization solution" should include support for USB attached devices, don't you think? VirtualBox still doesn't (in its "Open Source Software" edition).
Corrections welcome, of course. I'd love to see VirtualBox live up to its promises.
Edit: Sorry if I'm harsh; I was really hoping they'd have changed this by now.

Since v.2.0 they've made some changes in VB memory management resulting in permanent crashes of all my VMs in my computer. Additionally now it begins to require considerably more physical memory (RAM) to run those virtual machines. So, my computer with WXP Pro, 512 MiB max becomes obsolete (from their perspective). The only suggestion was to buy a new one (which I will, of cause, but not for VB only). I've gladly returned back to VMware that handles it very well. So, see ya later, VirtualBox...

| I'm running VMware Workstation 6.5.2. There is no any problem with it at all. It certainty has a superior memory management comparing to VB. If VM requires an extra RAM, it simply asks Windows to allocate it (Windows swaps it with paging file, as usual). Latest versions of VB may simply crash in this case.
It's pity that I wasted all my time with VB. I was successfully running multiple VM's in VB until v.2.1.2 was released and installed. Then I started to have problems with memory allocations. I've reported it in VB forum, waited for new releases and saw it again and again. That problem was never being fixed. I've tried v.2.1.2, 2.1.4, 2.2.0 - all ended up with reliable crashes. Finally, instead of fixing this new and obvious VB problem, they have suggested to buy a new computer... Thanks. Now 512 MiB in host computer is not enough for VB to run any guest VM, except DOS. With this attitude in development I hesitate to try v.3.0. May be I'll try it again when they make v.5.0 and at that time I'll have a supercomputer to satisfy its increasing demand for computer resources...
I have not tried Xen yet. My computers have processors that are not in the list of supported CPU's. But as soon as I get one - I certainly will.

What does it do, or not do? e.g Ubuntu 9.04 freezes/hangs in VirtualBox 3.0, while in 2.2.4 it runs just fine.. Installing 3.0 guest additions makes the problem worse. |

Well actually virtualizing USB devices isn't easy nor universal really, as when I have to do it I break out VMWare or Virtual PC within Windows 7. I am curious as to what virtual tool you use that supports virtual USB devices?
I like checking out different virtual tools (Virtual PC, VM WorkStation, VB, etc), and I was going to update my VB install, but after reading this thread I think I'll hold off a bit, thanks.
I love virtual systems as its like having disposable computers, so great for so many things like testing etc. I know that sometimes virtual software can't replace the real thing and I have a stack of systems in my office ready for such occasions, but I'll always try a virtual system first and see if I can save myself the 'real' hassle.

| Yup; it sure seems a given that "professional-quality virtualization" should include elementary USB support, and yet VirtualBox includes it ONLY in its proprietary closed source offering, rendering its description ("the only professional-quality virtualization solution that is also Open Source Software") suspect.
In other words, VirtualBox can do it all right, but are only willing to do so in their freeware(non-OSS) / payware versions.
Personally I generally stick to VMWare but am very interested in Xen.

I think some people hoped Sun would allow the USB in the OSE version, but that has yet to have happened.

As far as VB charging for a 'Pro' product, if that is their 'marketing' plan then so be it. I purchased VM WorkStation, but I think I'll be waiting until the dust settles at least on VB before purchasing their 'pro' model if at all, given I'm fairly happy with my other virtual tools (free and otherwise).
