 Acanac SNEAKY RENEWAL, NO REFUND

I recently moved to a new apartment right around the time my Acanac connection was set to expire. Without any prior notice, no email, no call or anything, Acanac automatically renewed my service and charged me $400+ for a full year service. Now I'm at a new place that already has an internet connection, and they won't cancel my old service.

I replied the next day saying I have moved and cannot use the service anymore asking for the renewal to be reversed. They wrote back to me saying, that renewals were automatic and that I should have read and all the legalese they have on their website. This is simply unacceptable, they are asking me to pay for something I can't even use.

I have been very happy with Acanac's service so far (even though I don't get download speeds anywhere near the 5mbps they advertise) but charging me for a full year of service and not refunding any of it, that's just fraudulent.

I'm sure you'll get your refund minus a months service, but it doesn't happen overnight.
You have to work it out with the billing department.

Sorry you didn't read the Terms and Agreement.

If you had notified Billing in advance this wouldn't have happened.

As far as Legaleese it's an easy read, unlike some others.

What's unacceptable is you can't read terms and conditions. This is *your* fault and no one else's.

stay tuned

@videotron.ca
These type of "automatic renewals" have been submitted to be reflected in the new proposed Consumer protection Act in Quebec.

Stay tuned...

If things work out they will no longer be able to do this for Quebec consumers.

You know................
Even then if that were in effect here.
The provider could just end the contract, and disconnect the service.

What Then?

Customer would scream bloody murder about that as well.

The thing is to be prudent and read the Terms before you accept a good deal, or any deal for that matter.

If people can't see that it's a Special Offer as mentioned numerous times on the web page and that it won't last forever?????.
What do they expect Internet for $18.95/mth forever?

Actually, a provider could:

Contact customer a month before contract runs out, remind customer of the renewal term options, calling attention to the default option, and ascertain the customer's wishes, if different from default.

The fact that the business practice in question is outlawed in some jurisdictions clearly shows that it is at least questionable, and not necessarily what a reasonable person might expect, the legalitious fine print notwithstanding.

Unfair criticism may be akin to uncritical defensiveness.

A Provider Could..........

Of course they could, that's painfully obvious.
And who knows they may do so in the future.

It is what it is Planiwa, and one does have an obligation to at least understand what the Terms are. What they're getting into.

A very small percentage of people don't read the terms and end up on here crying the blues. The majority do read the Terms and you don't hear them complaining.

I for one I was amazed at the price for the first year, of course I was a bit leery, but I checked it out and no complaints.
