Re: Steam: 50% off Fallout 3

I did some side quests, and the main, took me 17.5 hours according to Steam. Not too bad, Oblivion however was much longer.

It was worth the 25$, though I was left dissatisfied with the end

Thanks....been wanting to get this, but not wanting the $50 price tag..downloaded it last night and played enough to get to my 10th bday party. I can already tell this is going to last me a looooooong time as I generally only get about 2-3hrs every other day or so to play. (Sometimes more, sometimes less), but I can tell it will be worth the $25 time wise, at least.

I am actually currently playing Neverwinter Nights 2, as I never got around to it when it originally came out....its a decent game. Load times suck, but a good game....it will be nice to finish that up and transition into this, and then I have Mass Effect after I complete FO3.

I gripe alot about not being able to play as much as I used to, but man do games go alot farther, and plus I can get them after they've been out forever, so don't get the new game price.

I have also been playing it on my Vista 64 system and its fun as heck. No bugs for me like Somnambul33t has reported. The game runs well on my quad core system thats about 1.5 years old.

I am trying to finish Prototype, but its hard because Fallout is a lot more open.

Got it. Installed it. Started playing it with no problems on a 32-bit XP system. Seems pretty interesting to me so far and is cheaper than taking my family to see a movie or getting a new blu-ray. So, it has been worth it for me!

My first Steam account and game. Played it over the weekend and really enjoyed it. Installed and ran fine on Vista 64 without any problems.

If you liked Oblivion, you'll like Fallout 3. It's the same basic game premise just set post nuclear war.

games been nothing but buggy. steam forums are up in arms about all the bugs, and have been since launch. i dont think bethesda gives a shit, they keep pumping out DLC as if they were EA and still have game-breaking bugs in the main game. 5 times i loaded up the game, once it froze before it loaded the main menu, once it froze inside the main menu, and once it froze after choosing my name.

also whatever it installed during its 1st load killed my ATI catalyst control panel and the game forces Vsync on even tho i have it disabled in both CCC and in the game's options panel itself.

ive run the tool to remove GFWL, installed the latest C++ redistributable, .net 3.5, and Direct-X.

this game is a joke. it installs completely outdated (even for retaiul release date) versions of DX, C++, and .net.

it has outstanding launch day bugs with many codecs and codec packs.

it requires GFWL, which is complete garbage and buggy in itself.

if i cant get this working when i come back from vacation i'm going to ask valve for a refund.

I enjoyed it. It is a little flat main story wise, but there are a ton of side quests that you can enjoy. The main thing I did not like is the level cap. I was able to max out my level before I got all the way through the main story and it just felt like a shooter at that point. I finished about half of the side quests before I got bored with just shooting and haven't played since. There are some rewards besides XP that are good to get from the side quests but they are mostly just better weapons and armor.

I really enjoyed Fallout 3. I will certainly be getting the DLC for broken steel.

Being as that I am almost done with Prototype, I bought this game. The $25 price tag was too good to pass up. I am going to be playing it tomorrow probably.

I don't even like RPGs and I loved this game. Not sure what made me decide to try it, but I did and it was well worth the time. Highly recommended. BTW, if you've read 'The Road' you'll certainly enjoy this game. A lot of similarities in the feel of the story (well, if you're creative enough).

Ok, is this game worth buying? I am tempted since its on sale, but what are your thoughts?
The DLC, especially the one that allows you to continue the game past the main story, is crucial in my opinion, and I have only played the PS3 version with no DLC available. If there is a way to get that particular add-on included with the Steam version, than I would get it. There are lots of great games out there, and this one isn't going anywhere. I'm certain that there will be a GOTY version with every DLC included. Just wait it out. Having the ability to play beyond the main story and increase your character's level will be worth the wait.

If the single player experience is what you are after, I strongly suggest that you wait. It's not the type of game that will erode in fun over time. The story will still remain pertinent 5 years from now, and you might have more powerful hardware to run it.

The Witcher was amazing and the enhanced edition makes it worth it to play it again.

i thought it was a great game. I have a good pc to play it. But here is my topic talking about the problems ive had with it.

»Fallout 3

I might get it for xbox or something but for the PC it was unplayable. Atleast for me. If you do searching on the internet there is plenty of topics of people not being able to play it....then comes the people who blame it on them and not the game itself. Witch is a load of BS.

Opinion is just a word people hide behind to try and justify them believing stupid things. It sure is easy to believe in something completely and totally stupid, say it's your "Opinion" and then everyone has to respect it.

if I were asked to recommend a current CRPG I gladly suggest The Witcher over F3 anytime.
A really nice game that never once crashed, but was still pretty easy for an old man like me.

Well, $25 should give you 30+ hours of gameplay... possibly much more if you really enjoy it.

Personally, I think Beth can shove the $$$DLC extra content up their asses... not a fan of gouging customers with paid addons that should be free (and requiring GfWL to access dlc, even with Steam). To me at least, call me a purist maybe, PC games are not and should not be treated the same as consoles. Just an example, The Witcher gives registered owners free extra content or addons as they become available... if I were asked to recommend a current CRPG I gladly suggest The Witcher over F3 anytime.

I think October...the problem is Steam doesn't offer any DLC options for Fallout 3 right now...there's a few out already.
Can you buy the DLC options through Games for Windows on the Steam version? I am looking at the DLC and it looks interesting. Some of the DLC content is $10 each or so.
not sure, I guess you can.
Its still a tough call. Wait till October, buy the GOTY edition for $40. By then a couple other games will be out that I will be playing and I probably won't pick this up. Either that or buy it now, play it out, buy the DLC if its interesting and spend about the same amount if not more for the DLC plus the Steam version.

I will read a few more reviews on this.

TK421,

Thanks for the review. I have never played any of the other Fallout games, but I am looking for a game that will take up some time until September when Champions Online and Aion come out. I am currently playing Prototype and its fun, but I am nearing the end of the game I think and I am doing every side mission and challenge along the way. Fallout 3 sounds like a good game, and the reviews make it sound pretty good. I just don't know if I want to plunk down $25 to buy it. Still, its a good deal since its going for $40-$50 right now.

Much like any modern remake of a favorite old movie the game will appeal more to those not so familiar with the originals. Fallout 3 is pretty good overall, does reasonably well imitating the style of the defunct Black Isle Studio classics, but ultimately feels flat and too combat oriented. To me it was like comparing Planet of the Apes (Charlton Heston, 1968) with Tim Burton's version (Mark Wahlberg, 2001): quicker, flashier, far superior special effects or "graphics" if you will, yet it left me thinking he (they) completely missed the point by turning it into an action piece. I'd watch the Charlton Heston flick a dozen times but once is enough for the remake made by people with zero connection to the original... same goes for Fallout.

I felt Fallout 3 is reduced to console design, meant to played with a gamepad, and to not offend parents who might take a look at the screen from time to time while their kids play. That's not necessarily bad but disappointing for sure when it happens to a genre defining sophisticated and mature PC game franchise like Fallout; games such as Fallout set apart PC gaming from consoles, now that separation is erased. The ludicrous and horridly thin main storyline in F3 leads to an absurd ending involving a totally unnecessary and contrived sacrifice (especially with Fawkes standing present). F3 is however a nice RPG action shooter, only do not expect great things from the story and while there are some finer character interactions they go few and far between.

Don't get me wrong though, I do think F3 is worth buying. I do not however consider it an all-time great game. So many things done right, so many more done wrong or missing entirely imo.
