Unnamed Network/Linksys Router problems

I had an old Linksys Router (BEFW11S4 ver. 4) and it worked fine and sent out the wireless internet signal through XP on the main computer. My family's laptops have Vista but would still pick up the signal fine.

Over time, no one would be able to pick up a wireless signal. The router would send a signal but it would just be "Local Only". Comcast set up the signal last year under the SSID name "Linksys". Looking on forums online, I read having "Linksys" as a SSID name can have conflicts since it could be common around my aread.

After seeing the XP computer still connecting to the internet Wired, we assumed it was the router so we got another wireless router and this one was Linksys model number "WRT54G V8.2". After installing it, SSID name Linksys was still sending out the local signal (unplugged weirdly enough) but a new signal came up "Unnamed Network".

Unnamed Network was not there until I plugged in the new router. I have no idea how to find out the SSID name. I know Unnamed Network is the new router because its 5 bars in my house. Unfortuantely (or Fortuantely) its security enabled and I have no idea how to access it.

I tried to do Run: ipconfig but then it pops up and pops off within a split second so I cant do any configurations.

I have no idea what to do. I just want wireless internet. Any help would be appreciated. I have to go to work but I will be back online within 5 hours of posting this.

Thanks again.

just follow the printed or CD-ROM instructions that came with the WRT54G. Or download the Quick Setup guide and User manual from Linksys' web site, support section.

You'll need to change the SSID from "Linksys" to something like your initials. And set at least WEP encrytion mode. Perhaps you need a friendly geek to help. If the instructions (quick setup guide) are stil greek to you, doubtful we can get you going via this venu.

Just leave it Linksys, changing to your initials, family name, house number makes it too easy for people to key in on where it is located. As for encryption, better to go with WPA and change the admin password.

Leaving it Linksys makes for more confusion. It there is concern about an SSID making you personally identifiable, change it to mynetworkstayoff, but don't leave it as Linksys.

Sorry to sound like a noob but how would I go to changing the SSID name?

Log into the router setup page. Point your browser to 192.168.1.1 (typical for Linksys, but check the manual for your device). Should be under wireless settings.

Ok. It is late now and do not want to wake the kids up. I will try this in the morning. Thanks and I will be back!
