Re: R410A

R22 is old and will soon be illegal to purchase. It was replaced, mostly, by R134A.

Wait until you meet HFO-1234yf.

Sorry thats incorrect, R12 was phased (taxed) out and replaced by R134a.

R22 is being replaced by 410A.

I could have sworn that I have seen window shakers that use 134a.... or am I thinking about refrigerators....

Regardless.... I think you have to have an EPA card to get anything except 134a.

22 won't be illegal to purchase, just extremely expensive. You can still buy 12 if you want. I just picked up a bottle for a special job a couple weeks ago. Nearly $900 for a 30 pounder.

New systems previously using R12 and R22 (refrigerators, a/c, etc.). Niche hardware with specialized requirements will still run the gamut, including CO2. You'll see R22 available but it will be "recovered" refrigerant from existing systems. The price of R22 will skyrocket like R12 did.

I apologize for the confusion. R134A is not a drop in replacement for R22. R410A isn't either. R407C is as close as it gets. Many manufacturers using R22 redesigned and then switched to R134A to avoid higher costs. My window unit runs R134A (8 years old). My central air runs R134A (6 years old).

HFO-1234yf (a flammable substance) will be replacing R134A in new automotive and other mobile A/C systems. Europe first, then North America. The systems are under much higher pressure.

You're right. I misspoke. It will be illegal to manufacture or import, not to buy or sell nationally.

1234-yf isn't that different from a pressure point of view.

Comp output Pressure (Red is 1234yf - click for full size)

The real wild one is R-744 (CO2). It runs at pressures between 5 to 10 times higher than R134.

That's good! Shouldn't cause any more leaks into the atmosphere. Sounds like a sound well thought out plan.
