Hp Pavilion 9535nr problems

This lappy is about 18months old and I think motherboard is fried.
The display is black and I can't reach bios or recovery consol.
Connecting an external monitor didn't help either.Seems like the lappy is dead.
The HP logo won't show up either.Nothing, just a black screen after a bootup.
Any suggestions how to find out what exactly is wrong before I shell out $300 for new motheboard?
Thanks.
How difficult it would be to replace a mobo? Is it a task you can do home?

you could try removing the memory completely, and hitting the power button. If the system power light comes on but makes absolutely no noises with the memory out, you can suspect a bad board.

If it makes beeps, its a good indication your board is OK and may just be the display.

You could turn it on and let it run long enough that it usually takes to get to the operating system, and see if the Caps Lock key, Scroll Lock key lights turn on when the appropriate buttons are pressed.

If there is any lights that normally come on when the system is turned on, that do not come on now, thats a good indication the board is shot.

motherboard replacement really isn't difficult. it IS time-consuming and you wind up with a lot of screws, different sizes of course, and then generally there are some internal components that have to be removed. I usually use a piece of paper to document the screws (back cover, LCD, top right corner, bottom left corner, modem, pci device, whatever). I have even made a diagram of the system and put the screws on the paper where they came out of

It makes few beeps with memory modules out.
Caps lock and Scroll lock lights turn on when pressed.
I connected an external monitor but it's as black as the lappy's lcd display.
2 days ago I could see the HP logo after a bootup, could reach safe mode. After few minutes of running all the text became unreadable and all I could see was bunch of color lines over the screen. I restarted and the screen is black since then.

AMD processor? If so, check out this page:

While that specific model is not listed, it may be included in this problem. I had a customer a few weeks ago with the same exact symptoms, the specific model # wasn't listed on that page but HP support verified that it qualified for a warranty repair. (motherboard replacement) They sent the shipping box and mailing label to me, about a 7 day turnaround. No cost at all on my part. The deal extends the warranty to 2 years for this specific problem.

It has Intel Centrino inside.

Hmm this is so weird. I did like 10 restarts today and all I was getting was a black screen. After the last one HP logo appeared and I could reach the HP recovery manager and start formatting ....

After few minutes of running the HP recovery manager the screen is all blurry, getting colour artifacts and pixelization is unacceptable.
Anyone has any ideas?
Thanks.

Could it be the video card? It has Nvidia 8600GS inside.
BTW laptop's video cards are integrated to the mobos or are they dedicated cards as in desktops?

When I was logged in Vista after few minutes the display was becoming blurry and when it got back to normal I was getting this message few times: "Display driver crashed and has recovered."
Could the problem be the video card chip?
Now the screen is black again after a bootup.
This confuses me

Good job, you did some good troubleshooting!

it really sounds like the video card at this point. It would explain why the external monitor didn't work.

Is there a way to disable the video card?
Why I can't reach bios?

The video card is, pretty much, disabled. Thats why you can't see any image. It seems to be failing or dead.

You can probably reach bios, you just cannot see what you are doing, since there is no image.

I would guess that video card is an add-on card and should be replaceable. You would need to start disassembling the system to check it out

I chatted with HP technician and he said it's hardware issue.
The video card is in-built on the motherboard and it's approximately
$400 to replace that.
The nearest HP support center is in Best Buy. The thing is I don't trust those Geek Squads people as they proved to be useless in most cases.
What would you do?

i would find the part number of the board (may be under or around the memory bay area) and see if you can find a cheaper board and have a local place or friend/relative do it.

Its just a matter of removing everything and putting everything back in and not shorting the board in the process.

There may be guides on the internet for your specific system. (walk you through how to do it)

Just an idea.
Could this all be caused by faulty memory module?
Just to know if I should try and install a module from my other lappy.
Thanks.

Btw the cheaper board I have found on the internet is $275.
So I think that to ship it to HP and let them to replace it and get extended warranty is smarter then to do it myself.
What do you guys think?

A faulty memory module can cause windows corruptions, BSOD's, reboots and crashing but no, it will not cause the video card to fail.
