More on monopolies

said by koshoka:

I don't think the word means what you think it means.
I don't know the exact conditions where sturm is at, but there is a chance that Comcast has a "monopoly" as far as wired high speed residential internet goes. That doesn't mean one couldn't use another provider. Nobody is forced to use Comcast, ever.

Sturm, can you elaborate on why no explanation was given as to why you can't subscribe to business class? Did you call them and ask, and they said no, and you said why, and they hung up? Just curious.

Should "wired high speed" be defined ?

Is it a bit of a gray area ?

Sure, wired high speed internet = cable (comcast, road runner, etc.) or dsl

O/k. Fair enough. So it is considered, and/or you personally consider that DSL is "high speed" in the exact same class as is cable broadband ?

I wouldn't say they're the exact same class but close enough. I wouldn't consider cable broadband in the same class as dial up.

"Close enough" ? Dude.... Your opinion ?

Can DSL do 22/5, 50/10 ?

Ok, they are in the same class. DSL here can do 20/896.

20 ? Where ? Not even right next door to the C.O. or connected to an R.T.

Does 20/896 compare to 50/10 ?

Where? I don't know the exact location but qwest sells it.

Do the 2 compare to each other? yes.

Duuuude.... Way to distract from my original question

your options for wired residential internet are fiber, cable, dsl, dial up. From what I gather so far, sturm can get either cable (Comcast ONLY) or dial up. I may be wrong, theres 88 pages of this bs

Me too, I was also giving sturm the benefit of the doubt about the "monopoly" but that effort is now wasted...

I do not need your benefit of the doubt. Read up the previous pages. This is a common story, I am sure everybody complaining must be wrong, indeed.

Fair enough, then there is no monopoly

I 100% agree that comcast should deliver on their promise to provide a meter. They say 250GB, the should provide a means to track it.

Comcast Internet is not a utility.

Comcast Internet is not a utility.
That is why it should be reclassified as one and regulated as such. I did mention the word legislation, I am sure.

If you do not consider it a monopoly, that is your opinion. From where I live, looks like one. I tend to believe what I see on the ground rather than someone else's opinion that is not confronted with what I have to deal with.

It is not a monopoly. You say satellite signal is spotty poor? Unless you live on the north side of a cliff, that is basically impossible.

I have trees that I would rather not cut. Here in the south there are frequent storms that mangle the signal and there are pretty black clouds. Elevation is maybe 30 ft from sea level. I am sure in Colorado at over 3000 ft elevation with clear skies things may look different. Also, satellite has "creative" AUP's in order to "enhance" the customer "experience". I did classify in one group dial up, IP over avian carriers and satellite and I do not consider it an alternative, so there is no point to discuss it.

I say it is a monopoly, you say it is not. There are large groups on both sides of the argument. Neither one is going to convince the other regardless of how much hair splitting is done.

Re: Is Comcast a monopoly?

we have "pretty black clouds" too with torrential downpours frequently and we're over 6000 ft elevation actually. and I've used satellite internet at both sea level in northern alaska and at 11,000 feet, I'll admit it has high latency. but you can't say comcast has a monopoly. You can't get a T1 line?

Define monopoly

I had good satellite connectivity at sea level on a Kirov class vessel, but I cannot have something like that in my backyard.

I have a neighbor that has a T1, but the reliability is not that great, so I did not get one.

Define monopoly
The only available cable internet provider cut me off for one year. No DSL, etc, as described. There is another cable company 2 miles away that I contacted that would like to do an overbuild but cannot do it due to CC's franchise (their exact words).

"Exclusive control by one group of the means of producing or selling a commodity or service: "

The equipment that would give good satellite Internet access would be too impressive for the homeowners' association and disguising a large dish as a lake is not something that is within my means.

More BS! Franchise agreements are about how much $ the cable co is paying the local gov. They are by Federal law NONEXCLUSIVE.

It is not BS but a fact on the ground, as much as every person that I have ever talked to here absolutely hating the cable co and having the same complaints. Maybe you should talk to some of your customers.

Regardless of the medium, an ISP is an ISP. Just because Strum does not like his other options does not mean they don't exist. There is no monopoly.

O/k. Fair enough. So it is considered, and/or you personally consider that DSL is "high speed" in the exact same class as is cable broadband ?
Let's not go into semantics "high speed", "full speed" and all those hair splitting to muddy the issue.

dial up, IP over avian carriers, satellite = crap

DSL, unmolested cable 8 Mbit or better = broadband

capped, throttled cable, no matter what "up to" speed = your choice what you want to call it

fiber, not capped = what the Internet access should be

I have a 6 or 8 Mbit connection via cable with a 250 GB/mo cap, which translates to less than 1 Mbit/sec without the possibility of being harassed, so this is what I consider I have, a 1 Mbit connection that "could" spike to 999999Tbit/sec, whatever. This is worse than the 3 Mbit DSL I had 10 years ago and much worse than the RoadRunner then TimeWarner cable I had before. What you call it does not really matter when you look at the numbers.

I am content with the connection as long as I am left alone and no more "creative" ways are found to "enhance" my experience. I do not like the lack of a meter and what I consider to be the misleading advertising regarding what the connection is and really can deliver, that is all.

I don't consider the the differences between DSL and cable broadband to be "semantics"..

fiber, not capped = what the Internet access should be

"Fiber". Do you mean Verizon's offering of the FiOS product specifically ? Or is this question "semantics" as well ?

When I say fiber I refer to Verizon and any other provider that could deliver a quality FTTH connection and not to "the largest fiber network in the nation" that brings a nice coax cable into my house.

The DSL vs. cable are semantics when DSL is pushed as an alternative to cable and when I say it is not available the canned answer is "get dial up".

Once I got "the call" the charming "abuse" rep refused to upgrade my account to business class. Calls to the business class dept. were not returned.
There is no DSL here, the other cable company cannot do an overbuild due to the CC franchise (that is what they said). Satellite signal is poor, 3G spotty, and dial up and IP over avian carriers are not "alternatives", no matter what a group here says.

Nobody is "forced" to have electricity, running water or natural gas service, but they are necessities for a civilized life. Broadband Internet is getting there, since more and more activities are either dependent on that or a lot more difficult without.

I could have easily kept my usage under 250 if the rep would have said so instead of the mantra "you have to drastically modify your Internet usage". What does that mean ?

I do not want to rehash the whole story again. You may believe it or not, you may disagree or not. I do not really care. Legislation will break these monopolies and that will be the end of that.

Wrong again. Many places require you to have utilities or your dwelling will be condemned or not granted a certificate of occupancy.

Your electric company, water company or natural gas supplier are considered "natural monopolies" because you can't get the service from anywhere other than your local provider. Because of their monopolistic nature, they are specifically regulated.

Cable companies do not fall under natural monopoly regulations because their services are specifically not exclusive.
