You can also get a cool program I really like called WMWiFiRouter
»global.wmwifirouter.com/consumer/

Which basically turns your phone into a wifi hotspot so anybody or anything can log into it as long as you have a wifi chip on that device.

Or like others have said you can use usb to hook it up and do tethering.

Thank you all for your replies, sorry for the delay in responding i've been away.

Ok i have a SAMSUNG SGH-i900 (3G) touch phone, on an unlimited web and walk plan with T-mobile.

I still don't understand how i get the phone to act as a modem and then how i connect it to my laptop. do i need specialist software?
It is a Windows Mobile phone, correct? You can either connect the phone to your computer the same way you do when syncing it, or connect via bluetooth to your computer (if your computer supports that), then once the sync is established, on your phone in the Accessories folder is an applet called Internet Sharing. Just run that ap and it will connect and give your computer an internet connection using the phone's 3G (or EDGE) connection.

Really, if you already have your syncing established, tethering with T-Mobile and a WinMo phone is as simple as connecting the USB cable (or Bluetooth) and pressing a few keys on the phone.

I tether my T-Mobile phone to my laptop when I'm in a location that doesn't offer wi-fi. The phone has a built-in ap which makes this nothing more than a click "connect" feature. I can tether using a USB cable (my preferred) or bluetooth. T-Mobile includes tethering in their standard "unlimited" data plan.

Like bada bing said, depends on your phone and service. What phone do you have?

Their speeds are high enough if you're in a 3g area, but you will run into issues with download caps for anything really bandwidth intensive.

People have been able to tether most phones for years, but it was only more recently phones started dropping this feature so you can't depend on a phone to have this feature anymore.

Is it possible to connect to the internet on my laptop by attaching a mobile phone to it. The mobile phone is set up and can surf the internet already (T mobile Web and Walk)

Many thanks
