| Modem rebooting
As I am new to the ADSL service (had cable before), I am not familiar with details about it. I used to have a almost 'static' IP before, it would keep for months if not year or so. Last evening I noticed that my DNS client updated the IP address, I looked at the modem log (2Wire modem) and saw that it rebooted at about that time (20:38 or so).
Is this rebooting normal? How often would it happen? I suppose my internet connection will be interrupted during this boot process. Is there anything I can do to prevent that?

| There's two reasons why a modem might reboot:
1- Bad firmware. It happened in my case, did an update, and it fixed it.
2- Something wrong with your power outlet? Maybe out of power?
3- Modem has a defect.
I don't think it's a connection problem, as the modem would just resync if the connection would give. |

On the 'resync' part: What does that exactly mean? Does it get new IP when 'resync' takes place? Would there be an internet disconnection during resync? Would one notice it? If one were using VoIP when resync happened, would the call be dropped? How often this 'resync' happens on a typical line? |

3. That's why I always buy new  Might not be it, but idk in this case.
Sync issues is when your modem loses a handle of the signal. You know when you talk on the cell phone and get in a tunnel and you hear screeching? Loss of signal  |

Yes, I have observed this, although I tend to consider it 'a feature, not a bug' kind iof thing. 
Specifically, I find the modem reboots when the line is in poor condition, and gets a clearer, much better synch once the process is complete.
Another modem I have is the Speedtouch 546 model. This one keeps up, and you see the SNR levels dropping to marginal levels when the weather gets dsl-unfriendly (warm, wet weather, rainy, etc).
People using speedtouch modems sometimes have the DMT program running and monitoring the modem and the line. One of the options you have in the advanced settings is to have it force a re-synch, or a reboot when SNR drifts too low, etc.
My suggestion to you is not to worry, the modem will reboot, resync and be back online in a couple minutes, and this happens when it really seems to improve your connection. |

| Well, thanks. The truth of the matter is that I would never have known if the same happened with my cable connection, as it would get back the same IP address. (The only way to have it get a new one is to keep it disconnected for long time, hour perhaps?) And, I could not see that modem's logs. I was getting sporadic messages from my DNS client that it could not get into the internet. It could have been a short disconnection like last evening's.
As long as it does not happen too frequently, I will be OK. The probability of disconnection while I am on VoIP in that case will be exteremely small... well, if that happens, it wil be just a dropped call. Try again... |

2wire modems reboot by design when they cannot establish a proper sync with the DSLAM. Once the modem tries the sync procedure a certain amount of time, it will automatically reboot. I have observed this first hand while viewing the modem's sync/training history. This is done on purpose. It is not a bug and it done to give the best possible chance of connecting properly. |
