2Wire Gateway - Change IP address

Hi,

I have a 2wire gateway from BT.
I want to change the local IP to one in my existing network range, and turn off dhcp.
Whenever i try, it just dissapears and needs hard-resetting. Very very annoying !!!!1

Surely this is possible ?!?!
I just want to use this net connection as a web proxy for certain users, so it needs to work with my network, not against it !!!

Any ideas ?

Once you turn off DHCP, the router is in bridged mode and only acts as a modem. The modem function cannnot be turned off and cannot be used as a 'repeater' or 'extender' for your first modem/router.

This is inaccurate. The DHCP service is unrelated to the routing capabilities of the 2wire gateway. The only thing the DHCP service does is to provide dynamic ip info (ip addy, subnet, gateway, dns) to properly configured hosts.

When you speak of 2wire and 'bridged' mode you are referring to disabling routing.

That is true but may be of no consequence depending on what the OP wishes to do.

Yes and maybe no. It is true the 2wire cannot be used in a WDS deployment as a 'repeater', however it is possible to use the 2wire as an access point only and in some deployments can be used to 'extend' coverage of your wireless LAN.

Refer to the image above, and configure the router IP address and subnet to whatever you need for compatibility with your network. Leave the "Enable DHCP" box unchecked and the DHCP service will be disabled.

Once you save those settings the 2wire will seem to disappear. You have to re-access the 2wire UI using the IP address you just configured it to use. This means you may have to reconfigure the IP on the computer you are using so it is on the same network as the one you just assigned the 2wire to. Everything must match.

EDIT: removed assumption.

Hi Guys,

That has worked, and i can now see it.

When i set it up as a proxy in firefox, i get an error telling me ...

"Resolution successful
The error has been successfully resolved. To continue browsing online, close all currently open web browsers and open a new web browser."

But when i browse away, i keep getting this error. Any ideas ?

What are you setting as a proxy in firefox (certainly not the modem)

If you change the modem IP and disable DHCP you have to manually set the IP, netmask, DNS (to new modem IP if not other DNS) and gateway (to modem IP) on your PC or anything else on your network (unless something else on your LAN is DHCP server).
