compatability for cpu

Hey guys,

My uncle has a 2005 HP Pavilion a1020n. I took a screenshot of his CPU info.

I am upgrading his memory to 2GB from 512mb but my real question is can I upgrade is CPU as well?

The only processors I see out there now, that fit his socket 775 LGA, are dual core processors. The hp website says that the FSB of the motherboard is 800, so not a problem. But will it work?

I want to know before I buy any processors.

Thanks ahead!

Unfortunately, the motherboard chipset for that Pavilion is too old to support any current Intel processor.

What is the most advanded CPU that I can put in? I guess something that came out 2-3 years ago that is not dual core?

Thanks BA for the reply

No way to tell for sure because it's a pre-built using a custom board from HP.

If you're looking for a meaningful upgrade, you'll need to replace the motherboard. For instance, a G31 board and an E5200 would be around $100.

Thanks a lot. I will just stick with the memory upgrade.

Custom boards usually use similar prototypes to retail boards.

More info on the board would help us determine what you can and cannot put into the machine.

I think (sorry not digging out cd with pdf manual) the ones we have with that processor only went up to a 3.2 P4 or something, so nothing worthwhile. Your manual link seems to say the same upto P4 3.4

Hmm, hitting the driver link shows a BIOS that says updated to support newer processors but doesn't say which. Possible it will take a Pentium duo of some sort. Generally haven't had much luck lately updating a CPU, the change just is not enough to justify the cost and hassle (and a bios upgrade in this case)
