As you have a modem / router combo, make sure you allow pings from the WAN side, as your ISP needs to know if that connection is alive or not. That should make a huge difference in dropped connections.

Is this true for all ISP's? I have ping blocked on my AT&T ADSL connection, but I have never experienced a disconnect.

Never made a difference with my connection. Like daveinpoway See Profile, I am with "at&t Yahoo! HSI".

It's the router that's usually behind the drop, and no, it's not necessarily true for all. I don't know the characteristics of the OP's setup, but it's just another item to tick off for troubleshooting, though.
