| Latency Issues
I have a question for the group at large. I am playing from Iraq (6 months to go) and due to shyte internet (Sniper Hill) my latency ususally hits 1300ms while questing and 13k ms when in major cities. Dalaran is out of the question (the latency icon invented a new shade of red for me). I have turned down/off all resolution and graphic detail. Question...Is there anything I can do from my computer side (Toshiba laptop running Vista though don't have specs atm) that can lower my latency? |

| reply to Ioseph i am also in iraq atm but i thankfully only have 3 months left of my tour. I looked up a few things and even tried the different packet routing software and i run a half decent laptop one of the 17'' gateway fx's and i am usually around 1000ms when there isn't much traffic on my network. When people start doing video chat and downloading even a song or two it will easily jump me up into' the 2000 range and much higher if people start doing some serious stuff. I have been literally sitting at like 900 latency and then all of a sudden hit up to 26,000 in a matter of seconds from people using p2p programs and stuff that not only receive's a good amount of data but also send it.
All i can say is learn to live with it. I raid as a rogue consistently with latency up to 2000 and i even tank naxx 10 on my paladin when i'm around the 1500 range or lower. Once you get used to it you won't notice it quite so much as you do now. Let your guild know what your latency is and that it could go to crap at any moment and if they are good folks then they will let you do your best untill you get home. I have been into uld 25 and i can pull 3k dps even with 3000 latency on boss's and i do a lot better whenever i'm not lagging so much and average out around 5k for 25 mans, more or less depending on boss and fight.
I choose to level up my paladin while i was bored sitting over here and to just farm stuff in the mean time. All i can think of is make sure you have as many addon's turned off as you can and that might help a little bit since you already have your graphics turned down all the way. Just make sure to keep "projected texture's" turned on i think thats what it is... or you will not see some of the bad things you need to not stand in and also won't be able to see paladin consecrate and stuff like that.
Push through it and i wish you good luck as i know when we finally get home to our "lagging" 300ms it will feel godly and we will want to cry from joy that our instant cast spells really are instant cast! |

| reply to Ioseph I doubt you'll ever have a good ping - but have you tried smoothping.com or wowtunnels? They might not make any difference at all but on the other hand could cut your ping in half (just provides a different route for your traffic to take to get to the WoW servers). |

| reply to Ioseph I am in Iraq as well..3 more months...and I just learned to live with my horrible latency. I average 1900...spike at 19000 on a reg basis. I don't raid....period. I do heroics if my latency is under 1500 but normally once we get going through the instance I lag out at least once and then 90% of the time I am on the brink of lagging out...hit buttons and nothing happens at all. So I try to limit that as well. I spend my time farming and doing dailies for some rep. |

This brought my latency down from around 300 to under 200... |

| i found that if you get on during the time when everyone else is on over there at your base you are screwed. so i changed my schedule. i worked every day around the clock. i was a firefighter over there. so i slept from 4pm when we was allowed until about 10pm then i got up and played then. and it cut my latency way down. and on like tue thru thur i could sometimes get like 400 latency while questing and i could go to dalaran but i still had like 1500 latency there. if your base has the free military net (DAWGNET) late at night is awsome. i was able to raid naxx 10 mans on it late at night. so my suggestion is try to rearrange your schedule if you can. other than that. there is nothing you can really do over there.
be safe over there brothers and sisters. give me a shout if you need anything. |

| for the most part i farmed anything and everything like crazy. i filled a 5 tab GV full of raw food, fish, gems, ore, leather, and enchanting mats. i have enough mats still to lvl 4 toons to max in cooking, firstaid and what ever professions i want. and farmed about 15k to 20k gold. so use the time you have to get a bunch of stuff farmed that way when you do get home you can power lvl your toons. also you can easily lvl toons to 70 with that latency. just stay away from northrend.
the wifi you are picking up there at liberty is a private one. the civilian contractors use it to upload data they need to. it usually only comes up when they do a data push. |
