I need some help with my fios install which could not be done today.
I live in unit B of a two unit house my tenant lives in unit A I own both units. The problem is the Electric meters for both units are mounted on the side of unit A. This is a problem because I don't want to run my ont off my tenants utilities What can I do? Can I make a new ground somewhere else On the property? does the ont run off a regular 120 volt outlet? In desperate need of advice.

1 edit | Not sure why you would have to use the tenants facilities. Power can be run a good distance to be able to get power from your 120v outlet. The meter is strictly a location for grounding purposes. If the ground rod is there, they simply ground it, they do not get power there. You can run the ground wire I believe 20 ft. and the power another 35 -50. |

Then where can they get power from. The tech said she would have to run it off the tenant utilities? Was she wrong?

1 edit | Is it less than 50 feet from a receptacle in your unit to where the ONT is?
If so, the BBU/PS can be mounted in your unit with the ONT where it is.
Or you give the tenant free internet service in return for powering the ONT.  |

Without seeing your property, I cannot answer where you will get power from. As an example however, if your unit is an over under duplex, usually there is some place that it can be installed. Whether it be a closet, garage, etc... Pics would do wonders. |

is the 50 feet restriction for power and fiber or just power? I wonder if I can buy a grounding rod and put it somewhere else closer to me?

Tampa, FL | The 50' restriction is for the power line running from the battery backup unit to the ONT. The line carries 12V DC power and is a tad larger than a tv coax cable in size. |

Thanks for all the quick help guys. How much fiber can they run in a given install? If I understand right you run fiber to ont and do rg6 off of that Does the bbu plug into a regular outlet? and can the ont stay outside?
I'll try and get some pix later today. |

If the ONT is installed inside, the technician can use a 441 block to the ground the ONT to a 3 pronged grounded outlet.
No practical limit on the length of the fiber.
Correct regarding fiber to ONT and RG6 from the ONT.
Yes, BBU plugs into a regular grounded outlet. |

How tall is your floor from the power meter? Ont has to be within 20 feet of meter for proper ground if more than 50 feet allow the tech to move the ont up and use that 20 foot allowance and then you gain more footage. or you could place the batteryback up unit in the other apartment and then extend the actual power supply the other footage. BBu has to be within 50 feet the actual power supply can be 100 feet from the ont. |

if we put the the ont in the attic of my tenant will it overheat. No temp control up there what are the temp tolerances of the ont?

If there are two meters, the tenant is repsonsible for the service. No tenant, or unpaid electric bill--when the power is shut off, landlord has no FiOS.
And that's a sad thing.  |

Someone would have to approve of it otherwise. |
