 | DSL speeds I have been looking at our recurring expenses looking for ways to reduce, and one of the things out there are the so-called 'bundles'. Comcast wants to give us phone service, as an example, and it is cheaper than what we have now.
But here is the surprise: Embarq also wants to play, and they are saying that they can deliver 10M of download speed, and 800± upload. These are huge numbers, and on balance the combination would be less money.
But 10M DSL? I thought DSL was limited to much lower speeds?
I was hoping someone would make me smarter on this or send me in the right direction. |

 | DSL can reach those speeds its just a matter of how clean your lines are and your distance from the Central office |

|
 | ADSL 2+ has a theoretical throughput of 25M |

 | Stunning really. I had no idea, and thanks. |

1. Call your current provider(s) for these services and say that you are thinking about cancelling, they may offer you discounts on the spot to stay (ex. VZ offered me $10 lower to keep my phone)
2. Check with current users of the new provider that you are considering switching to. They can tell you if they are actually getting the advertised speeds (if that is important to you). |

1 edit | reply to msadesign Yeah regular adsl is limited to i believe 8mb (and realistically you would only get 8mb if you live within 500ft or so of the central office which is unlikely at best). They probably offer some sort of a VDSL or ADSL2 technology. Be sure you are eligible for it in the first place as I doubt many people would actually be able to receive those speeds. |

Re: DSL speeds said by aleshik1:Yeah regular adsl is limited to i believe 8mb (and realistically you would only get 8mb if you live within 500ft or so of the central office which is unlikely at best). I know that AT&T will sell 6 Mb at around 5,000 feet. A max of 8 Mb on ADSL would probably be more like 3,000 feet than 500 feet, and is quite realistic.
