Is Aion worth it?

I really have been looking for a new MMO to play for a while. Been doing a lot of research into what is coming out and I already decided to play Champions Online because I am a big fan of the superhero genre. Well, that and my beta experience has been awesome.

That being said, Aion has also caught my eye. I am a PvP kinda guy, and I know that champions online will be more of a PvE game with some PvP thrown in here and there. I am ok with that, but before I invest into Aion, I want to know what kind of game it is. I have read some reviews that state its a PvPvE game which means that there are elements of PvE in the game that you have to deal with as well as enemy human player factions. I also have no idea what the balance is like or what people really think of the game. The fanboys all think Aion is the second coming with no flaws. I wish I could find some very objective viewpoints on this game.

I hate to have 2 subscriptions to MMOs but if Aion is worth it I will invest in it. What are your thoughts on Aion?

I believe NCSoft likes PVP also. Look at Lineage 2, which I think you have before.

The game looks good IMHO, pretty and all that. But I am not ready to hibernate to a pc for lengthily amount of time. To much summer left to be indoors.

With that said, if this game came out in October or later. I would jump all over it. I probably will then anyway. So save up some gold for me. I will be looking for you for a loan.

Edit: Spelling.

Be warned: it installs some fairly horrendous, buggy spyware that hooks into many levels of your OS.

Well consider what the purpose of game guard is.

You buy this game and pay a monthly subscription. Wouldn't you want some assurance that cheating is being thwarted?

The anticheat should be at the server end, not at the client end. Thats just my thought on the matter though. That is how WoW and other mmorpgs do it.

I agree JukeBox, I have seen Lineage 2. I just don't know if this game is for me. I hate to invest $50 into a game I won't play very much. Especially with Champions Online getting some of my time here in the next week or so.

So far the reviews are excellent from fanboys. Poor from people who hate the game. So which is it? I could assume somewhere in between.

I played the China OB and been playing the NA beta so Ive spent some decent time in Aion. Why do I plan to play it? First is since its been out in other markets there are very few bugs. Second is that it runs beautifully on maxed settings, I was getting up to 200FPS in areas and the lowest it went was 50FPS in busy locations..maxed settings.

It has a pretty standard UI that they wont allow MODS to customize so you are stuck with their UI, but its not a POS so this hasnt bothered me. You can somewhat customize it in game. The game itself is beautiful, much of the graphics are very WOWish.

Classes I find are well done. All have something they offer that is benficial, but of course there are some one would consider overpowered compared to others. You basically dont PvP in the game until level 25 when you can go to the Abyss. You can pvp sooner in arenas. Once there you can level through PvE or PvP and gain abyss points / rank to buy gear upgrades, etc. PvP is very fast pace and since everyone gets wings at level 10 people can fly which adds a new level of fun to it. IMO its critical to have friends/ legion to play with if you want to be successful in PvP. The abyss ranking system is similar to WOW's old Grand marshall system which means death has meaning once you get higher up.

Overall its a solid game and I expect it to hit over a million subs in NA eventually. I expect a smooth launch and I already know from beta that there are few bugs and it runs well so those arent concerns unlike recent games that have come out(IE AOC, WHO, etc).

I'd like to hear more about that. I tried to like City of Heroes but couldn't. The character creation and combat was fun but after you've done four or five missions you've done them all. It was really repetitive and boring after the first week. Have they done a better job of that with Champions?

Without breaking the NDA, I can say yes. They have improved on the product greatly. The NDA is lifted in about a week and a half. I can then post my thoughts about it.

City of Heroes was indeed fun for a while, but I lost interest in it after I did a lot of the missions. They have since retooled things and added a lot of features, including real PvP action.

If you are a fan of the superhero games, you will love this game.

I'm not too much of a superheroes type of guy so I'm not particularly interested in playing COL. However, some of the gaming boards have real hatred for the guy at the helm of COL, Bill Roper (?). I guess Bill is the genius behind Hellgate, which I never played myself but have read some hard core hate coming from folks who did play it. With all this hate, even if I was a superheroes fan, I'd probably by weary about buying it.

I played 2 of the earliest closed betas in Aion but stopped playing until launch because I don't want to burn out on the questing before the game goes live--I don't care for questing, I'm pretty much a PvP gamer. I have a Aion pre-order and plan on keeping it and playing the first month for sure but after Warhammer, I'm cautious.

I would suggest pre-ordering at Amazon and checking out the next beta weekend. If it's not your thing, just cancel the pre-order....

This is incorrect, WoW uses both server and client-side cheat detection.

There is still debate over Warden, the process that runs on your PC when your run WoW which monitors the active processes you have running to make sure you aren't cheating. Many still consider it spyware, but you agree to let it run on your machine when you agree to WoW's ToS.

Yea, Bill Roper is getting a lot of flack because of the Hellgate London fiasco. What people don't like to acknowledge is that he was at the helm at Blizzard for such hits like Starcraft, Diablo, and Warcraft.

»en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bill_Roper···ducer%29

He was also named to IGN's top game creators of all time list.

»games.ign.com/top-100-game-creators/41.html

Point is that one game has shattered his great track record. People just like to look at Hellgate London and smash the guy.

There are some people that are wary of the game, and if you are not a fan of superhero video games, then this game probably wouldn't float your boat. At the same time though, as I said before, if you like superhero gaming then this game is the best out there. I really enjoy the beta right now.

Thanks for your input on Aion. I just preordered through Amazon. I am going to play the beta next weekend. If it sells itself to me, I will keep it. If not, I will cancel.

This just shows how fickle the gaming community can be. He has one unfortunate landslide on his mountain of pure awesome and the interwebs try to crucify the guy.

I was aware that the guy responsible for Hellgate is the same guy at least partially responsible for the aforementioned Blizz hits.

The vitriol thats being spewed about Bill is more about the subscription plan Hellgate had than the game itself from what I've read. Some of the posters, especially on Blues News, think Bill is little more than a common criminal.

Granted he has a decent track record in various types of games but not in MMO's, at least not in current market being anything in the last 8 years. He was not involved in WOW.

It's interesting how he got involved in Champions Online.

He apparently contacted some of his contacts at Crypic trying to get into the CO closed beta a year or so ago. When they found out who he was (this was shortly after Hellgate had imploded) they hired him on the spot to come in and help guide development.

I always thought that was certainly an interesting decision for Cryptic to make.

Yup, I agree. People who bought a lifetime subscription at the beginning got just enough to break even when they closed down. However, you can't blame the entire situation on Roper.

I think the same could be said about any video game maker. Every one of them have had hits and misses, even game creators like Sid Meyer who created Civilization had his share of failure when he created Alpha Centauri. People said the same thing at the time, that he was an accomplished game maker, but not a sci-fi game maker.

Meh. People shoot and miss the mark all the time. From what I have seen from Cryptic and Bill Roper so far in the Champions Online Closed Beta, its a great game. Course, its not all Roper thats for sure.
