| [DSL] Replace new modem with old?
Ok, I'm trying to research this, but remote tech support = suck. My sister has AT&T DSL in Chicago. Her 2wire 2701HG-B just died (out of warranty, natch). I have an old SpeedStream 5360 modem from several years ago just gathering dust. As far as I can tell, the main difference (besides the wireless) is that the 2wire supports ADSL2+? I have no idea what her service is, but is there even a chance the 5360 would work?
Thanks! |

| The other difference is that the 2Wire does PPPoE, while the 5360 doesn't. You could use it, but you would have to configure the PPPoE client in Windows. -- AT&T dsl; Speedstream 5100b modem; Zyxel NBG334W router; openSuSE 11.0; firefox 3.0.12 |

EDIT: Here is the link to set up the PPPoE client in Vista:»windowshelp.microsoft.com/Window···033.mspx
And the one for XP:»support.microsoft.com/kb/283070 |

| reply to Confusatron I got full Elite speeds with a 5360 when my 2700HG-B died (trouble sync'ing and slow 256 kbps download sync on Elite even though upload sync was normal) until I got warranty replacement 2701HG-B. The 5360 still tested 5+ Mbps.
I have not had any problems with the 2701HG-B, but I have heard that some people had issues with the power supply (maybe that is your sister's issue).
What are the digits after 5360? 5360-023 is the only one that had a firmware upgrade, due to issues autonegotiating 100baseT. I have one of those with updated firmware and an older 5360-002 which always worked fine. 5360-123 already came with the updated firmware, but some people mentioned issues using it with some Linksys routers, but that may have been with older router firmware. |

| reply to Confusatron I have a similar issue - I was going to use one of my older modems to connect a new DSL user, (5260 4100 B etc) so he wouldn't have to buy the "new stuff."
I know my way around setup routines for all these devices in both XP, Vista etc...... as well as many others.
When I tried to "test" them - they connected, but set themselves to a "99.xxx.xxx.xxx" network address and diverted any Internet request to an "unsupported configuration" help page - telling me to call for assistance. In other words, I set them up correctly and AT&T is rerouting any request to their help pages......
These modems have previously connected without incident - has AT&T stopped supporting them recently - or is this because of an unknown hardware issue that I don't know about?
In both instances - I have gone through appropriate device setup routines to configure PPOE - DHCP user account etc.....
But I know 2wire uses additional; device ID settings......
Any help? |

| I get into the 99.10.x.x pool very often and have no problems using that range of ip addresses
The 99.142.x.x pool is what you'll get with the "attreg" user id password When the password and/or user id is bad you'll also get redirected to a "help" page
I doubt its a "unknown hardware issue" or that att has stopped supporting the modems
Can you post a image of the "unsupported configuration" help page and give more info about the user id used |
