| Remove all firewall functions from an Embarq 660R ADSL modem
I've encountered lots of disconnects from the modem recently and believe there is a conflict between it and the router. What settings would need to be disabled/changed on this modem so that ALL traffic, including DHCP, is passed to and handled by the router? |

What does the DSL LED show when you have these "disconnects"? If it is not solid green all the time then that is the problem. Double NAT/NAPT in of itself does not cause disconnect issues. -- Whats the point of owning a supercar if you cant scare yourself stupid from time to time? |

| reply to ulme sashwa, yes it is. If you think it would help then please move
Doctor Olds - I believe the DSL light has been solid, though that may be a fluke. When disconnected I reset the router hoping connectivity will be restored but it doesn't. A few minutes after the router comes back up the modems DSL and internet lights go out. It takes several hours for the lights to come back on and connectivity to restore.
I don't know if the problem is with the router (going bad?) or the modem. I will bridge the modem and install a new router if needed to see if either stop the random disconnects.
McSummation - thanks, I'll check this out later today!
Thanks everyone for the help! |

| reply to ulme said by ulme : the modems DSL and internet lights go out. That sounds like DSL issues. Loss of the DSL Sync Signal.
Try getting the DSL Stats from the Modem and posting them. There should be a write up in the Embarq FAQ on how to read the stats. -- Whats the point of owning a supercar if you cant scare yourself stupid from time to time? |

| reply to McSummation Following these directions changed the modem to bridge mode but then my internet connection went out a minute later. I had to revert back to "routing mode" for the internet to come back up. I have not had any more sync issues since replacing the dsl phone line with a shorter cord. I am still having issues getting some programs to function correctly eventhough the router is configured for port forwarding. To narrow isolate the problem I would like to get the modem working correctly as a bridge. Any ideas if that's possible? |

I am still having issues getting some programs to function correctly eventhough the router is configured for port forwarding. To narrow isolate the problem I would like to get the modem working correctly as a bridge. Any ideas if that's possible? You can use these instructions to bridge the Embarq 660 series modem:
1. Open Internet Explorer and type 192.168.2.1 in the address bar. 2. Type in the default password 1234 and click Login. Click Ignore if prompted to change the password. 3. Click on Diagnostic listed under the Maintenance menu. 4. Select the Network Layer option and click the Release button. 5. Click the button labeled Change to bridge Mode.
Once the modem has completed the change, a message stating "Current operating mode is bridge mode" will appear on the screen and you can exit the set up.
Once you have finished that, power off your DSL modem, and power off your router. Then power on your modem, and wait for the DSL light to stay lit, and then power on your router. By doing it this way, you're making sure the router pulls an IP and you should be able to get online.
Step 4 is the important step, if you do not release the IP BEFORE bridging the modem, then the router may have to wait until the lease expires to pull a new IP. If you followed the above directions and still can't get online, log in to your router and see what IP it's pulling. It should no longer be a 192.168.2.x IP but it should be a public IP address. If it is not, then release and renew from the router's webgui and you should pull an IP and get online.
Keep in mind bridging the modem would not fix an issue such as the DSL light going out - DSL light going out = loss of sync and would not be caused your router. However it looks like you've got that taken care of now. |

| reply to rabeatz That worked! I did those things before just not in that order which may explain why none of my routers worked when putting them online for the first time (the ip wasn't being released quickly enough). I'm no longer having port forward issues and can access my WHS pictures via the web. Thanks so much for everyones help.
Joey - thanks. Luckily there have been no issues with the modem in awhile. |
