 TCP/IP problem

I am not sure if this is the right forum for this question. I have a iMac and DSL connection. I have connected to the internet using DHCP on the computer for years. Now all of the sudden (past week) I cannot connect to the internet. I figured out two ways to get around it finally, but I am still wondering what happened/is happening.

The first method is I have to go to the room with the wireless router (connected to the DSL modem) and turn it off then back on. Another method I found is if I switch my iMac from DHCP to BootP. Trying to use DHCP without doing the first method nowadays won't get the IP for my modem and just stays with the IP for my router. Trying the second method for some reason does get the IP of the modem.

I don't see why all of a sudden DHCP does not work automatically and why this BootP method lets me connect when I never used BootP before. I am not sure what the difference is between DHCP and BootP either except that I read something about BootP is older. I also tried switching from DHCP to BootP and then back to DHCP but that works only 1 out of 10 times so it is not a very good method.

It sounds like you have a fairly old, grandfathered account. I don't think DHCP has been available, under SBC, since the late 90s. And, possibly, somebody on their end changed something so your account is now the normal PPPoE. I can only suggest a post to the AT&T Direct forum, and see if one of those techs can straighten things out.
