Needed Verizon tech to "break ip lease" to restore service

Strange one.

I always power off everything each day, just so you know the baseline.

This AM , I booted up my 2 computers + the Verizon Router .

I was assigned an IP and all the router status page items were OK.

One problem, absolutely no internet access. I've never seen this before on Cablevision or the few months I've had FIOS.

I called tech, and eventually, they broke the ip lease on their end, I rebooted the routed and all was well. New IP, and normal internet.

Anyone else ever had an IP address just 'die' on them from one day to the next?

Gary - After no internet access, did you try power cycling the router again or did you go directly to a tech? Do you have FiOS TV? If you do, I'd recommend not turning off the router as you need it for Guide and VOD.

Yep , power cycled, made no diff.

As for the router, I don't need the guide or VOD while I'm sleeping.

Power cycle does not release the DHCP lease. That's an active process requiring the router to request the lease to be broken, not just drop offline. There is a "release" button somewhere in the status page of the actiontec I believe. Might want to find it and remember it for next time you have trouble, and try clicking "release" followed by "renew" a few moments later.

The IP Address is assigned to the MAC Address of your router. Raphion is right: If you intend to shutdown your router for any reason, and for any length of time, it is best to "release" your IP Address, so that the next time you start your router, it will grab an address that is available at that time.

If you still have questions at this point, please refer to your user manual supplied in the welcome kit, or call 1-800-VERIZON for assistance. Please have your home telephone, or contact, number available.

I'm sorry, the business office is closed. Please call back between 8am and 5pm Monday through Friday when you are at work and busy doing other things. I suggest that you request paid time off (2 Hours or more) from your employer so that there is no impact on your personal budget.

I don't recommend powering down the router as it's not meant to power cycle so many times, it will shorten the life of the router and power supply.

Just leave the router on 24/7/365. It only draws a tiny amount of power so leaving it on will not be an issue for electricity usage.

Keeping your router powered on all the time is a good idea. It's designed for continuous operation, and doesn't consume a lot of power.

I think one of you may have hit on what happened. OOL's ip's did not change on router reboot and are tied to the mac address. Never had a problem with that.

Verizon seems to assign a new ip every boot. Thus , I wound up with an IP that had been reassigned to someone else.

Still, seems a little odd that it would matter. If the IP addy is assigned to me , why would rebooting the modem matter?
Where's the 'mismatch'?

I've been powering down nightly for 30 years (not a typo) without blowing anything up yet, I always take these stories of equipment not liking it with a LARGE grain of salt, as you couldn't prove it by me.

That said, I may leave the router on just to avoid the IP hassle in the future.

Verizon's IP lease is 2 hours. Most cable co use much longer leases.

It's true that the IP lease is not managed by the router. The router is just a bridge/switch between the ONT (box on the side of your house) and your computers. I have been able to break the lease without a tech, though. Keep in mind that this will kill your phone and TV and it can take up to 10 minutes for everything to be restored to full functionality.

1. Power down the router and pull the ONT's power
2. Disconnect the battery from the battery backup system
3. ?????
4. Profit!

About 6 months ago I was loosing connectivity every few hours to few days and would have to call support to get them to break the DHCP lease. It took them replacing the router twice and dozens of breaks to figure out the ONT was the issue. In that time I figured my little workaround out. I was sick and tired of having to call support several times a week to get my internets working again.

The Actiontec and Westell routers ARE routers. Yes, they perform bridge and switch functions, but they contain the full functionality of any SOHO router.

It is the DHCP client in the Westell/Actiontec that negotiates the DHCP lease with VZ's DHCP servers. Powering cycling the ONT should be the last resort for releasing a DHCP lease.
There are a number of methods for releasing a DHCP listed in the following FAQ:

Actiontec ip release procedure:
Log into router (192.168.1.1; admin &password1 are the likely username& pswd if the router was configured by VZ tech)On left side of main page, click on the globe image, which will open a page of LAN & WAN connections to the right. Look across the list for "broadband connection coax (if MoCa) or broadband connection ethernet, click on whichever shows as "connected" to expand , scroll to the bottom, click "settings" then scroll back up to the middle where you will see the release & renew buttons. After releasing disconnect or power down router to prevent it from auto renewing with the ONT. It is important to release routers before changing, as the ONT marries MAC address and will not recognize the new router unless its predecessor has been released first.

Not arguing, as you got most of it right, but just to clarify, the ONT doesn't marry anything on internet. The IP/MAC association takes place further upstream. If anything, the ONT is the so-called modem. I'm cringing as I say that, because the purists really hate to use that term with fiber. Close enough to say the ONT just converts laser signals to RF video and ethernet signals.

The reason rebooting the ONT may clear up a connection problem is because it renegotiates authorization to deliver services.

Also, in many cases but not all, the IP address can be released simply by letting it time out past two hours.

And if the router is connected PPPoE (rare but not insignificant), it likely gets a new IP each connection.
