| [cable] WAP problem
I have a Comcast Arris TM603G cable modem connected to a Netgear Wireless Router set up as an access point i.e. new IP and DHCP off.
Using cable from the Netgear to my laptop works. My laptop uses the DHCP on the Arris and I have internet access.
However, when I try and use wireless, communication stops at the Netgear Access point. I am unable to ping the Arris but can access the Netgear. I have tried manually entering the wireless IP settings (Arris) and it then claims to be connected but I cannot ping the Arris or connect to the internet.
I have searched for a solution to this but haven't found one. Any comments would be helpful.

The Netgear Router needs to use DHCP on the WAN side. |

join:2009-10-01 | reply to meditek You need to turn DHCP on on the router. The modem will only hand off one IP, regardless of how many devices are connected. Unless you are being given multiple IP's by Comcast, which I doubt is happening, the Arris will not hand out multiple IP's. |

| reply to meditek Thanks for the info. I had been trying to set up for Lan and Wifi depending on where I was using the comp which was probably doomed to failure with the IP problem.
However, I will try dedicated Wifi with DCHP enabled again. The last time I tried it the comp came up with an IP relating to the Netgear and couldn't connect to the Comcast even after re-setting it via the reset button. |

| reply to meditek Reset the router back to factory settings. Unplug it.
Reset modem. Let modem lock completely.
Plug in router.
Plug your computer into the router via ethernet.
Set up your wireless network.

| reply to meditek Do you have your modem plugged into the ethernet port on your computer and the wireless card connected to the router?
When you plug the router in after having your computer connected, reboot the modem. Let it come back on, then plug it into the WAN port on your router. -- Tech at the Beach. I speak for myself, not my employer. |

| reply to meditek Just to clarify :-
1. With the Ipconfig I have shown I have :-
a) internet connection via modem-router-laptop on the Ethernet Lan.
b) no internet connection via wireless and I cannot ping the modem either
2. My router does not have a WAN port, just 4 LAN and ADSL phone port.
Thanks |

join:2004-03-03 uk | Well what is really puzzling me is that using cable the link 'passes through' the router to the modem and uses the modems DHCP but the wifi link does not. I cannot understand why you thought my Wifi link was good? |

1 edit | said by meditek8 : I cannot understand why you thought my Wifi link was good? Because you are getting a valid private IP address assigned to your computer by the DHCP server that is built in to the router. |

1 edit | reply to meditek8 said by meditek8 :2. My router does not have a WAN port, just 4 LAN and ADSL phone port. Thanks There is your problem. This will not work on a cable system. With DHCP on your computer is battling with responses from Comcasts servers as well. Get a router designed for ethernet (with a wan port) and your problems will be solved.
Most likely that router / modem combo can't use the wifi with the built in switch to pass through the DHCP info, so it has to use the DHCP of the "router/modem", giving you no connection without being plugged in directly. -- Tech at the Beach. I speak for myself, not my employer. |

join:2004-03-03 uk | reply to EG Yes, but I need the wifi to look at the Modem's DHCP in order to access the internet just as it does when on the cables. This has been the root of my problem all along. |

1 edit | The arris works just like a regular modem WRT DHCP. Something in your setup changed. It is just silly to use an ADSL modem/router combo on a cable network. Get a real router. You will be happier, able to use multiple devices, and be safer on the net.
BTW - when you reset the arris, just pulling the power does not do it. You have to take the battery out as well, or hit the reset button on the back of the modem. -- Tech at the Beach. I speak for myself, not my employer. |
