Record number of L4D-2 Pre-Orders

so much for the boycott. I have mine in

Largest number of pre-orders in company history

Valve looks to be on track to set a record with the largest number of pre-orders of any product in company history. The strength of the pre-orders for Left 4 Dead 2 is perhaps a surprise to Valve, as they have only a little over 3 million units of the first installment of the franchise.

The company is set to ramp up its advertising, as the company will invest $25 million in an ad campaign to get the word out for Left 4 Dead 2 in an effort to push sales even higher. The investment of $25 million in advertising is the largest ad campaign that the company has ever embarked upon, and far larger than the $10 million that the company invested in advertising for the first Left 4 Dead title.

Set to arrive November 17th for both the Xbox 360 and PC platforms, it will prove interesting to see whether or not all of the advertising dollars spent equal more sales of Left 4 Dead 2.

How does this have anything to do with the boycott? No one ever suggested the 40+ thousand people in the boycott group represented the entire player base.

What you need to keep in mind is that it will be the total numbers that tell the story, not the presales.

However, I'm still bothered by the fact they are STILL selling L4D1 - even though it is effectively a dead game.

Will I pick up L4D2? Sure, eventually. I'll wait for it to go on sale for 50% off sometime after Christmas and then get it then. Seeing as I would have paid $25-$30 for the game if they released it as an expansion to the first game, there is no reason why I won't pay that for the new game.

In the end, this incident gave Valve a black eye, so I hope they learn from it and don't make the same mistake next time.

L4d2 is a continuation of the story of L4d 1. The virus has moved from the north to the south.

As good as Valve has been with tf2, no company is that good, and no company should be expected to give a sequel with a new story for free.

I think people have gotten spoiled after getting so much free TF2 stuff that they expect every new Valve game for free. No company could do that, and L4d2 is completely new. It's not like, a roster update with a new box or anything.......

I was never in the 'free' camp myself. I don't expect the content that they call L4D2 to be free any more than I expect the Half-Life episodes to be free.

However, can you imagine if Valve charged full price for the HL episodes and called them "HL3" and HL4" etc? That's where the objections lie.

L4D2 is an expansion, it's not a new game. It should have been priced and sold as an expansion, not a new game.

IMHO anyway...

IMHO no other Game company on the planet has repeatedly given out more bang for your buck. I'm sure that if I ever were to put a price on my Valve entertainment over the years it would be under $0.05/per hour. No other form of entertainment can give you that.

L4D 2 is what they promised L4D was going to be. I personally am not buying it for full price. As for story, what story? There's a few different scenarios but no cohesive storyline to follow there. It's not a continuation of anything other than the zombie theme. I had some fun with L4D but it got old, especially the mainly brain-dead community of players, fast. After the first few weeks it was nothing more than rage quits and 5 year olds screaming obscenities. The server match system was broke and didn't get better when they "fixed" it.

I have a lot of respect for Valve, but that respect is wearing thin. It started when they canceled the Black Box option and is being even more strained with this L4D 2 debacle. They seem to be pulling moves that I would expect out of EA and not the company that has always put its fanbase first.

The story was meant to be in the game, playtesters booted it out. Crash course readded part of the story.

The story took place in Pennsilvania, originally the 4 suvivors (BTW, louis and Zoey were supposed to be lovers...) traveled first to Mercy hospital to find it was overun, and to escape on a helicopter only to find the pilot was bitten and has become a zombie. Zoey shoots him (You can find evidence of leftover sound clips, you can also notice zoey talking about the helicopter pilot being a zombie in crash course, and francis getting mad at her). They used the truck in crash course to go to Riverside, which begins Death toll. They then end up crashing from the boat to the dead air campaign, and finally find refuse at Echo base.

Look at this map (Which is in game btw):

Left 4 dead 2 is NOT what L4d should've been, except to say that wanted to make the game story driven. The original game, the original story, was originally supposed to be like this, but the original testers shot it down.

FYI, if you don't care about the exclusive bat and early access to the demo, Best Buy has a $10 gift card free with L4D2 pre-orders.

Leave it to Valve to screw up the demo release.

Good idea, should have done that myself.

I will say this. As someone who has played the Left 4 dead 2 demo extensively...It ROCKS!!!

It's better than the original in every way. Valve has done a remarkable job at making it stand out. I thoroughly expected to be disappointed. My only complaint about the demo itself is it is too short and too easy, problems that the full game will remedy.

It looks like a graphics mixture between HL Episode 2 and TF2 but with the L4D game engine.

What?! Sigh... I really didn't want the cartoony graphics from TF2 in L4D2. Anyone got some screenshots of the demo in game? My home PC is out of commission right now, doing some hardware/software upgrades. I found some on google, but they are blocked here at work.

It does NOT have the cartoony graphics of TF2. I can upload a screenshot tonight if noone else has. The graphics are actually improved over the original L4D.

just played the demo for a few minutes this morning, but it is not THAT cartoony, certainly not to TF2 levels.
