It's possible that the Vigor2200USB could be offered as on option with BellSouth ADSL service that uses a USB ADSL modem. |

ffblackieYou called 911 for this?Premium join:2002-01-13 Knoxville, TN | reply to crirvine Any chance the price on this will come down soon???
This is the only USB router I have been able to find anywhere...
I would think that there would be a good market for them?! |

My experience with the unit was less than impressive but obviously some have had different experiences. I would spend my money on a more tried and true solution but your mileage may vary.

 | reply to crirvine Leevis, what kind of speeds were you able to obtain? |

leevisGrowing Older But Not UpPremium,ExMod 2001-04 join:2000-10-28 Pascagoula, MS | It averaged 850-900 down and 120-150 up. My Cayman provides a very consistent 1230/220.

 | reply to crirvine The other aspect that people will I think frequently not realize is how will the USB router function for example under real-life load? That is if a user has several devices all which either maxes out the USB power max allowed, heavy usage such as webcams, USB-CD/RW, or USB-speakers, printers etc...
This is one of the big issues USB people have, as the load demand increases, as well as the CPU processing of the USB stuff, things slow down, the power within the USB goes up and down, things disconnect (people complain their USB modems not working, keeps disconnecting and so on), among other things.
Perhaps the router concept should be limited to USB 2.0x environments that have greater data streams and I presume a greater power range than USB 1.0xx ---
I think it is a great concept, one long over due, but I also question how well USB "networking" will truly function particularly when contrasted with other protocols such as TCP/IP, and transport mediums such as ethernet. -- CHAOS - Where Great Dreams Begin |

leevisGrowing Older But Not UpPremium,ExMod 2001-04 join:2000-10-28 Pascagoula, MS | Actually, this unit is a traditional TCP/IP Ethernet based broadband NAT router. The only "unique" feature is that instead of having a WAN port that requires an external Ethernet modem, it requires the Alcatel SpeedTouch USB modem (Stingray). It has a USB modem port and onboard drivers to run the modem. From that point on, it's just a standard Ethernet router.

I think routers will be upgrading to USB 2.0, but I bet they would still have to be backwards compatible with 1.0, someway?

 | reply to crirvine LBB - My comments about USB 2.xx etc was based on the misinformation on my part, it was my understanding that this "USB Router" was all USB and using USB as a network protocol between PCs etc. So my remarks are not relevant. According to Lee, the router is really an ethernet router, that has a WAN port that is USB which you plug in your USB DSL modem, instead of the RJ-45 WAN port for ethernet. So it appears that the WAN port is USB and converts the USB datastream into TCP/IP stuff. And apparantely all the USB drivers etc needed are already flashed to the USB chip in that box to handle it. -- CHAOS - Where Great Dreams Begin |
