[Serious] Going down to Memphis to help out, sure hope I do!

My brother, the one who's 2 year old son has cancer, has asked me to come down to Memphis Friday and help out a little.

Now I have to admit, I am a nervous nelly, I hope I can really help out. I am such a clumsy ungainly guy that I sure hope I don't mess up in any way, and it's going to be hard seeing my poor precious youngest nephew in the condition he is in, I hope I don't break down in tears when I do.

I love Colin very much, when he was just a little infant I held him in my arms (last time I held a baby in my arms I was a teenager baby sitter) and fell asleep while I held him, which melted my nervous heart. Before Colin was discovered to have cancer and obviously ill, I used to call him my little bruiser because even as an infant he had the physicality of a football player, a tough kid.

Because one side of his body is parallized, his expressions reflect the paralysis and it is painful even to just look at his current photos, it tears me apart.

While Colin still needs all of your mojo and prayers, guys, I also need your prayers as I go down there and hope I don't screw up in any way. I am going to be responsible to get Colin's older brother to school and do other things involving great responsibility, and I have to admit I am nervous I could let down my brother in some way.

I have to admit that ever since becoming disabled I have lost a lot of the king size confidence I used to have, I used to be too cocky and over confident, now I am the opposite. Even though my brother is a baby brother, I actually really look up to him. While I went to college before him, he graduated Ivy League. He had to bust his chops to get through, and he did so and I cried at his graduation, he and I went through some tough stuff as kids, and I wasn't there for him when, as a kid, he needed me.

Sorry to go down a personal path here, I'll stop there, I just need to talk to someone about my being anxious. I guess I am just thinking aloud, I just hope all goes well for the several days I'll be down there. I bought a box of medical masks, so I am ready in that way...

Edit to update: »[Serious] I made it to Memphis and I am at St. Judes

You will do just fine, I am more than sure of that.

Your brother wouldn't have asked you to come if he didn't know how much you care about his family, and didn't trust you to do right by them.

It will be a good thing for you and them to have this chance to do things together. A loved ones illness, even a very difficult one, is so much less intimidating when you can actually do something that helps, and I would be very surprised if all of you don't benefit greatly by you going to help with the kids.

I can't say it any better than mouser. If I recall the "clumsy ungainly guy" greatly entertained Colin a few months ago, I'm sure you'll bring him joy only you can bring.

Illness of a family member has a way of polarizing a family.

I'm sorry it took this, but I'm sure your family will be very grateful just for you being there. Whatever you do to help, Even if you don't feel like you're helping, will be looked at as a blessing by them.

Your brother wouldn't have asked you to come if he didn't want and need you. I'm certain you'll have the strength to be appropriately cheerful for your young nephews.

This has gotta be a difficult time for the older boy. He's worried about his brother and so is everyone else. Giving him some special attention might benefit both of you.

Will your friend/roommate be caring for Phay while you're gone?

You can do it! We will help you.

I have a disability and I have been my parents' biggest advocate during their cancer fights. I have my mom to thank for that.

I can't add anything useful after that!

Though I have no worries over the benefit you will bring, you do have my best wishes!

Guys, thank you all SO much!

Yes, PW will be in the care of Dave, poor Dave, she is a handful! She loves to jump on his back and climb up on to his shoulder, when she does it I always hear a loud "OW OW OW!" LoL.
