HLDS freezes, unable to connect

I'm trying to set up an old school non-steam Half-Life server on a W2k Advanced server machine. You can see it from the clients, but you cannot connect. It says "Could not connect to the game server Reason: Connection failed after 4 retries."

The strange thing is, when a client tries to connect, HLDS freezes for about 45-60 seconds. The whole server does not freeze. The CPU usage is almost 0, but HLDS freezes.

I'm using HLDS 4.1.1.1, with the 4.1.1.1e patch.

Thanks

Just a wild guess...

Would it have anything to do with the WON servers not being active anymore?

Yep that's it. There isn't any technical reason that it shouldn't work without WON. And for people who purchased the original Half-Life back in the 90's, I can't think of any legal reason that they would be forced to use STEAM. Nothing in the original EULA that says you agree to stop playing on-line or switch to the then-current-system, when we take down the WON server. I've done some Google searches on non-steam hlds. I've found much instruction on setting up a non-steam CS server, but not much chatter on a plain old HL server. Any info on how to work around the steam issue would be appreciated. I'm not apposed to using a steam based server, I just want old non-steam clients to be able to connect.

Ok, so I found the hlds updater tool, and used it to install HLDS. the install went fine, and it doesn't seem to act quirky, or freeze on startup like it did before. Now you simply can't see the server from a any clients. It just doesn't communicate at all. Boy, what a pain in the ass!

Well I've had no luck setting up a server that old non-steam clients can connect to. Does anyone know of any existing public hl or cs servers that we can connect to?

Making Progress

I'm making progress. With the WON2 patch for windows servers I am able to connect to a LAN game with from the WAN. The only issue I have now is my server doesn't list in the WON2 servers.

This forum is a little quiet.

If I knew more about this I would be glad to help you out, but I can't imagine there is much market for this anymore.

Most of the people who were adverse to head over to steam have since accepted it.

Mostly, I'm just updating this thread for informational purposes.

Most of my friends that purchased the original HL in 98 are older now, busy working, and not that much into these games any more. We just wanted to set this up, and goof around with it, for old time sake. Currently on WON2 there are 758 servers with 2848 players, right this instant. Still a few people out there resistant to Steam.

I can honestly say I am suprised that it is that high still. I wonder how many of those people are bots at this point. The sheer amount of servers is promissing though.

I would love to play some of the earlier betas of counterstrike, as I liked the direction it was going when gooseman was running the show more than valve.

Yeah, the only reason I mess around with pre-steam HL stuff is because of mods that Valve bought and then made obsolete with their 'improved' versions.

Anyone remember Pre-2.0 Day of Defeat (Or pre-3.0 for that matter.. I'd rather play 2.0 then 3.0)? The game was completely different back then. Version 1.3b day of defeat servers still exsist. Granted, the difference between classes was non-exsistant for the most part. However, the game was much more open and just felt like a better WW2 shooter.

Ready to play?

Sweet! I got it working. Anyone with 1.1.1.0/1.1.1.1 can connect. We've been playing all afternoon. I couldn't find the server listed on WON2, but apparently others did, because an Internet visitor dropped in now and then to play along. If anyone wants to jump in, by all means your welcome. Just go to multiplayer, then Internet Games. Click cancel when it tried to connect to Valve. Click Add server, enter half-life.kicks-ass.net:27015
You should then be able to join the game. It's a standard half-life game right now. Standard old-school maps, nothing fancy. If that doesn't excite you I'd be happy to set up a mod game like CS or DOD, I'll even add some custom maps if you've got 'em.

Let me know!
