I think it's time to replace the WRT54G

For some reason it's bringing my whole internet speeds down to a crawl sometimes.. And if you reboot it the power light will flash non stop ('m up to 15 min now and still flashing) Other times you reboot and the power light will flash for only 5 or so seconds.

I have HyperWRT loaded on the router.

Have you tried a hard reset to factory defaults?

in the routers internal page? sometimes that can time out as well or it will half load the page.

I've pressed the reset button many of times.. sometimes that will cause it to work but only to act funny later on like when the power goes out.

Well then, I think it is time to replace it.

I just replaced my WRT54G v4 with a WRT610N.

My old router was losing connection every couple weeks and in between, it was timing out my XBox connections during heavy use.

I would definitely go with an "N" capable router. I stick with Linksys.

I chose the WRT610N because it also has a USB storage port. You can attach any USB external hard drive or thumb drive to it.

I was wondering what that USB port was for..

the only thing is I don't have any "N" gear around now.

Any of those "N" routers are backward compatible with "G & B".

Look through the different models. It's a mix & match of options like the USB port.

I too use a Linksys N router with DD-WRT. Seems to work out okay.

Another proven router is: »www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a···33162134

It's not a Linksys, but this Buffalo can load 3rd party firmware, and it has excellent hardware specs and a great track record.

I've heard good stuff about Buffalo never checked it out yet.. I will post my findings.. not sure why Linksys has so many versions of just a single router but maybe they have reasons.

There's no reason to know what version when he's described his issue. Troubleshooting is the same no matter what version; given the description of his problem.

i just purchased a linksys wireless n router to go with my wireless n gaming adapter. i'm using it for my directv. however, i have some g computers in my network. the place where i bought the router said that the n will operate at n speeds and the g at g speeds but the whole network won't go down to g just because a g hardware is in the network. my friend says no and says that the entire network will go to g even though i have an n router and n hardware in a mixed mode. it's a dual band router if that makes a difference.

The WRT610N has "Simultaneous Dual-N Band". I have my "N" devices on the 5 GHz band & my "G" devices on the 2.4 GHz band. Works great!

Higher than the "V4"?

The V4 is a work horse of a router.

There are many different models and versions. Not all run the same firmware. Thus, not all can be rendered in need of replacement.
