"HOW TO PROTECT YOURSELF Before recycling a phone, remove the SIM card. If you are not reusing the card, destroy it by breaking it in half. Delete any remaining personal information on your phone and restore the handset to its factory settings to fully erase the data.
- Consider buying software to protect your mobile phone from spyware and to permanently wipe information from memory cards used in a phone."

Delete any remaining personal information on your phone and restore the handset to its factory settings to fully erase the data. One caveat here is that with some phones, the order of the quoted advice might need to be reversed. I have run across phones that would not let you get past a "please insert a valid SIM card" type of message until a readable SIM was installed. -- History does not long entrust the care of freedom to the weak or the timid. -- Dwight D. In the US, MOST police depts will allow you to donate your old phone thru their dept to victims of domestic violence who are without a cell phone.

| reply to ashrc4 I also recommend a visit to »www.recellular.com/recycling/don···ones.asp
It's a cell phone reseller/recycling/donation program that identifies recycling centers by ZIP code. Usually, though, local abuse and animal shelters, community/senior centers and places like Goodwill or Salvation Army are always looking for phones.
The site also has a link to where you can download instructions to clear personal information and data from specific device models. See
»www.recellular.com/recycling/dat···ault.asp
It requires a first and last name, a valid email address and what carrier the phone uses/used. I've not been spammed from them(nor do they check the name ). When you submit the form, they send you an email with a PDF file containing the erasure instructions. -- The greatest dangers to liberty lurk in insidious encroachment by men of zeal, well-meaning but without understanding. -- Justice Louis D.
