[Wireless] UDP // subnet mask issue

Hi everyone,
this is quite urgent.

I have Windows 7 installed on this laptop and everytime this laptop is on, it will freeze/hang my two desktops.

Event ID: 8003
Source: Browser

Description: The master browser has received a server announcement from the computer that believes that it is the master browser for the domain on transport . The master browser is stopping or an election is being forced.

The best I can find to resolve the issue is from this link.
»support.microsoft.com/default...···s;135464

To stop the 8003 error messages, make sure the routers on the network are not forwarding UDP broadcasts, keeping browser elections on NetBT local to each subnet and enable WINS or lmhosts on the network for netbios name resolution.

Note Switches that are configured for VLAN's (virtual segmentation) have to be configured on a per VLAN basis to prevent UDP broadcast propagation.

Another resolution was:
To correct this problem, change the TCP/IP protocol configuration to the correct subnet mask.
»support.microsoft.com/default.as···s;143153

However, I have no idea what that means or what to do on my router to resolve the issue.
I am running Tomato 1.25.
Please help me.
Thanks a lot.

It this is the infamous windows "Master Browser" conflict you can not change or do any sort of setting to the router to avoid it. The issue is how Microsoft’s network service functions, the master (network) browser is elected and maintains a list of all network resources on a network (like a directory). Often the newest (both OS, and/or hardware) is elected (or chooses itself) as the master browser (your laptop). Unfortunately if you hibernate or power off your laptop when it is acting as the MB, while the other two computers are on, one of them is promoted to take over via an election process. If you power up your laptop again it still assume it is the MB and the fun you have been experience begins.

How to solve it? I would suggest you try a search over at the ‘Microsoft help »/forum/microsoft’ or ‘Networking »/forum/sharing’ forums on this site because this issue does popup a bit. Not sure about Windows 7, however on earlier versions it was possible to change the settings (via the registry) to keep a system from becoming the master browser, or permanently set systems that should be the MB.

Sorry I could not give you something more definitive to solve your problem.

One thing that troubles me is that you say the desktops lock up, while it is not uncommon for the Network Neighbourhood screen to become blank (or searches a very long time finding no results), the desktop systems should still operate normally.

The OP may find the following link to be useful, because it describes how to modify or disable the Windows browsing service when necessary. See »www.chicagotech.net/browser.htm for a useful set of instructions.

Good luck.
