[Wireless] Linksys ADSL modem/wireless router combo

Hi all,

New here...first post.

I have recently moved from England and am going to have att dsl service and chose not to use their equipment. I am having a bugger of a time finding a dsl modem/wireless router combo. Does the Linksys WRT160N fit this bill or is it just a wireless router?

Any suggestions greatly appreciated!

BTW, I have mac and windows xp machines.

Cheers!

The WRT160N is a router only, not a modem. Why didn't you want to use AT&T equipment? I'd at least get a modem from them which you can bridge and let the router handle authentication to the ISP, DHCP, etc..

Hi, thanks for your reply.

Didn't take the att modem or wireless gateway because I figured I could get a better deal on equipment I was familiar with. They wanted $87 for modem and $100 for wireless gateway.

What I didn't count on was the networking products I used in the UK not being available here!

I can still order the att wireless gateway and may still do that if necessary.....

Cheers!

The fact that they charge for that equipment certainly changes things. I've used AT&T in the past and the equipment (modem) was always free with a 1 year contract. You got to keep it after that. Have you considered eBay for a used one?

Yes, the charge was really what put me off. I could have received a rebate for the full price with the next level of dsl service, but with an international move I can't really afford that monthly outgoing just yet...

Ebay is a good idea...can I be cheeky and ask if you have any suggestions on equipment?

Last time I used AT&T for DSL was in 2000-1 so I can't make a recommendation. I still have 1 or 2 of the old Westell modems that I used, but I don't know if they'd work now. Hopefully someone will chime in on your other thread: »[DSL] ADSL modem/wireless router combo

kickin ass

Try finding a modem that auto detects VPI/VCI, unless your familiar with changing this setting. AT&T's VPI/VCI is 8/35. (well atleast in Atlanta) Broadxent 8012 modem does this.
