Lag in all online games...

Not sure if this is pointint to my ISP or not, but I had a previous thread open on Windstream's site, my provider, about latency issues in regards to gaming online, voip etc. The latency has seemed to be fixed, but I'm still getting these random spurts of lag mainly in TF2 and COD4. I'll be running along, no problem, pings are good (sub 70) on all games that I play. I'll play for about 20 minutes, and all of a sudden, lag hits. My ping stays the same, but for some odd reason I'll lag for about 5 seconds, then end up somewhere accross the map.

Would a lot of packet loss cause this issue? Here is a line quality test, most recent:

»/linequality/nil/2582489

My hardware is:

AMD 6000+ x2 processor
2 GB of RAM
WinXP
9800GT Video card

Running all of my games at 1280x1024 resolution. Haven't had any problems until two weeks ago.

Any suggestions?

Lots of loss from the west coast to you, so if you are playing on a sever in that region you are going to lag, based on your line quality test.

Your first hop is somewhat high, my first hop to that IP is 7ms, never reaching 50ms over 30 hops. Your ping times are relatively high as well. My ping times on most severs are 10-75ms. But ymmv, as not all isp's are created equal.

What are your advertised speeds? Have you tried rebooting your modem and router? Do you have any firewalls installed, software or hardware? What type of security are you using on your machine? I guess there are a lot of reasons that you are experiencing lag...

EDIT:

Just for comparison here is a line quality test from my laptop.

I'm running through a WRT54G modem. Only anti-virus I have is avast. My advertised speed is something like 3500 down/ 768 up. Yes, I've tried rebooting both, to no avail. I get the advertised speed.

I'm not really sure what to do now. I've done just about everything I can to fix this issue, calling Windstream every day at least twice a day, and they keep saying that it's in Level 3's ballpark, but then I call Level 3 and they say Windstream is supposed to call us and open a support ticket with us, not the customer of Windstream.

This is really starting to annoy me. I have no other option of broadband to switch to, and it seems like SOMEBODY isn't doing his/her job.

How are you connected to the router? Wired or Wireless? If you are running through the wireless there is a chance that you are getting intermittent interference from a cordless phone or microwave. This could cause you to see all kinds of funky lag issues as you would be dropping packets.

Also your line quality test is horrendous. There is likely something going on with the network. Local interference could be an issue as well, but man someone is screwing up with the network.

That's what I was thinking, possible interference. But the issue is that I've never had this problem before for 2+ years with Windstream. Now, all of a sudden I have problems. Big problems. I mean problems where I can barely surf without hitting F5 about three times before the page loads. And I've tried other computers too. Same issue.

Did e-mail the head guy at Windstream, and got a call from the tech I was working with, told me to set up ping plotter and run it 24 hours and see if anything happens in regards to packet loss. Will see what happens from there.

Oh, and this is wired, not wireless. When I tried a direct connect to the modem, the problem was still there.

If you come over to the Windstream forums (»Windstream) maybe we can help you more, also you should PM your DSL phone number to Windstream See Profile and let him/her take a look.

I noticed your 1st hop ping is about 50ms that's very high, I would think you have 1 of 2 issues or both, 1. high amount of interleaving to help correct poor line stats or 2. High amount of bandwidth usage (up or down).

First hop ping of 50 ms . . .hmmmm

Wireless?

Try going wired-only and see if that gets rid of it. Just plug your computer directly into your DSL modem bypassing the wireless router.

If it does, you might try changing the channel your wireless is on. Without further investigation, it's likely the problem is other wireless networks on the same channel . . .or there's a ton of other wireless clients going through your router and occasionally, it drops you.
